It's a big illusion and doesn't do what most people think it does.
It has its uses. Most things that get bubbles built around them do. But it's not the society-changing technology people think it is, apart from the fact that it's going to convince a lot of executives to axe jobs they're really going to regret axing.

Because people have always expected computers to do what AI does right now, for free. Nobody's going to pay for what's expected to be part of the package.

Corpos have been making us do exactly that for decades now. Even the rich have to pay to uncap the engines in their cars and heat their seats

The true promise of AI is what they want agents to do. And when you give AI the ability to use tools it turns into a massive, massive retard. You have to design agents in such a way that they're essentially a python script that randomly fails because they hallucinate and use the tools wrong. Without agents, AI is just a very good chat bot/auto typer. And that's worth money, but not what it's valued at right now.

Because it’s just a novel technology. Its output is same-y and easily identifiable as machine generated. The only way it can make money is selling surveillance tools to the government, which has infinite money to cover any expense. That is why so much money is being dumped into AI. You’re not the customer. You’re not supposed to be the customer. You’re not even the product anymore. You’re just a thing to be managed until it’s safe to get rid of you.
