Today I tried jagged alliance 3 on mint since I'm not willing to migrate to win11 when win10 dies. I thought it was a meme but it ran better through wine/proton than native.

His "latest" engineering video shows off having Arch Linux on both his Laptop and main computer. He started with Mint then switched fully over to arch after he finished ricing his Arch latop. Which makes sense.. You wouldn't want to stay on Mint when you have fully riced out arch.

this isn't true for every windows software. Wine has better support for older windows software than newer windows versions though.
Which is perfect for old boomers like myself who mainly play older games.

not having a distro based off a fork (Ubuntu), it's based off the original distro (Debian) instead, it cuts an extra step and is likely a better, more stable solution in the long term
I personally wouldn't want anything even remotely Ubuntu or Canonical on my machines, but that's just me

This is a server OS. It works as a server os because it is flexible, has a powerful terminal and it's libre so it doesn't cost a cent and is mostly immune to viruses and malware.
As a desktop OS however, it's complete trash and the proof is that in 20 years it has completely failed to gain any market share on desktops.
I'm convinced that anyone using Linux as a desktop literally does nothing on their pc except browse the internet, watch anime, maybe play some games on steam and tinker with the OS.

Since when is 'distrohopping' an actual problem? I used to like trying out all possible distro's when I was a wee lad.

It's not really a problem, just a waste of time. I liked doing it too back when I had no responsibilities and could just wank off all day.

>one click
More like, after one click fails to install, or it fails to launch, look up online how to fix flatpak so that it at least doesn't crash when you run it.
Or open up a config file to disable flatpaks altogether and use the distro's package manager. Only to discover it was left in a broken dependency state, and you need to spend the afternoon fumbling your way through AI written bullshit online to fix it on the CLI.

And this is why Linux is never going to be a usable OS. It's too fragmented and clunky by design. It's okay if you like tinkering, and have time to waste. But the moment you need to work on different stuff day after day, you can't afford this. Linux breaks apart sooner or later.

This is what made me switch back to Cinnamon. No matter what I tried I had a choice between compositing (vsync with weird stutters and bad performance in games) and no compositing (abysmal screen tearing in everything that's not a game). I like xfce though.
Anonymous No.105971855 [Report]
Linux mint cinnamon and xfce kept crashing on my more modern hardware to the point where I have given fedora xfce a try.
So far no crashes especially when gayming.

Not him but once Windows is set up it just werks. Flatpak is a bandaid on how bad it is to install and integrate software on your system. The closest thing to just installing a program, unzipping it and pinning the .exe to start is downloading an appimage and using Appimage Launcher, which breaks half the programs on your computer and causes them not to launch, so you have to uninstall it every time you use it. I'm sure there's a cryptic workaround for this too, I just haven't found it yet. This is just one of a myriad of issues Linux has. It works, but you're compromising functionality and stability for freedom from Microsoft. Everything is a tradeoff. Still, it's a lot better than it used to be 10 years ago.

Installed it on my mother's laptop.
At some point it crashed and refused to boot up, so I had to come, manually run fsck in that minimal initrd shell for it to boot up again.

I don't understand why a supposedly noob-friendly distro doesn't run fsck automatically when it fails to mount the disk.

I'm not aware of any, but Universal Blue distros are automating a lot more shit than other "noob friendly" distros like Mint and Zorin. It wouldn't surprise me if they're doing this or if they'd implement this feature if it's brought up in their forums or discord.
