When my friend got this, I never fully grasped what it was. It had "operating system" in the name, and I knew what an OS was versus an application. But GEOS always seemed to me more like an office suite. I know he used Geowrite and the paint program. But it's not like we ever used it to launch games.

GEOS was just a windowing layer on top of the OS
there was/is one for DOS as well, basically a competitor to Win3.0 (although I'm unsure of the time frame - probably too little too late). limited to 16-bit real mode apps AFAIK

the original DOS AOL client shipped with it. probably one of the few widely-used 3rd party apps to use it - only one I ever personally saw, anyway

I had a thread a while back where I said UIs like this on a semi-modern, but not fully modern stack (picrel was on Wayland), that could be efficiently run on $10-20 platforms was key to non-ngmi outcomes but I got holocausted by a jannie.

Thinking about how unix workstaions used to have first class software support makes me realize that the year of the *nix desktop already has passed us by.

just so beautiful.

minimalist dwm can't compete.
I'm going to have to make a chunky dwm with actual sovl.
