I got introduced to it, because I was going on a trip a year ago, where I wanted to do some hikes in the mountains.
Because of this, I needed an app with offline support, where I could also import routes and waypoints (for Geocaches).
I spent half a year planning routes on bikerouter.de, and generating GPX files with waypoints for caches.
Everything worked wonderfully, but since I'm a fat lazy bastard, I ended up not going on any of the hikes anyways.
If you plan to try out OsmAnd, you should download the version from F-Droid (OsmAnd~), which is the Pro version.
Afterwards I'd suggest these two videos, which gives you a pretty decent idea of how it works.
