There's literally two up right now. It's always the same stupid arguments thrown around too. You guys used to always post frame.work which my filters caught but now I gotta filter frame(work|shit) too because you stupid fucks won't shut up about it.
What's REALLY inorganic is framework threads constantly popping up with the same shitty stock photos and no one actually owning one.

I don't hate them as such but they do seem like a scam. The idea of a modular or user-serviceable laptop doesn't make much sense when there is no great market of third-party laptop parts all compatible with common standards, the way desktop computer parts are.

Cheapest prices to $938.
Ryzen 5 7640U / 8GB DDR5 / 250GB WD Black
There is a very similarly specced Lenovo IdeaPad 1 for $579
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-100/ideapad-1-gen-7-15-inch-amd/82vg00myus

And that's with the DIY option for the Framework, not prebuilt. Just to give you an idea of how expensive this shit is. It's genuinely not worth it since even Framework laptops don't let you swap out the CPU without buying a new motherboard ($379 is the cheapest), which isn't even that much more expensive than just buying a new laptop entirely.

I got a Framework 13 7640U DIY for $800 with:
1TB WD SN7100 for $70
Crucial ram 2x16GB for $70
AX210 WLAN for $20
100W Baseus charger and 2M right angle uGreen cables for $40
So $1,000...
I don't think that's that bad since I'm happy with it.
I've spent much more on laptops that I ended up not liking.

I've owned pretty much every X/T/P series ThinkPad model since the X220/T420/W520.
Modern ThinkPads just suck, either I'm really unlucky or the new ones have really bad QC and just poor construction.

It would be cool if Framework would retrofit old ThinkPads with new motherboards. I would like an X230 with a Ryzen CPU.

I don't buy framework because it's the most economically sensible decision.
People on /g/ have jobs. A lot of us make 6 figures. It really isn't that serious of a decision.
I bought it because it moved the needle and forced companies that are not Microsoft to seriously consider repairability as a selling point and not an afterthought.
It's also nice to be able to just buy the fucking parts I need and not go through a designated shitting call center.

My friend has an MSI gaming laptop with one (electrically) broken key.
You know how much microcenter charged to repair it? $460.

Framework, like fairphone and other such failed niche companies pretend to not understand that we want modular "repairable" products for practical reasons, not ecologist ideology.

Price and availability is KEY.

Desktops being modular is only good because they offer by far the best price and have very high availability.
Other laptops are 20-50% cheaper with the same specs and better build compared to framework. They'll also arrive in 1-2 days, while framework takes weeks to even ship, then has to arrive from abroad, assuming it's in stock at all (they mostly are not).

"Us" lol. Making 6 figures doesn't exclude you from buying an overpriced product. I was really into framework until I saw their build quality and shitty firmware updates. They compare themselves to the top tier products like >>105975749 so kindly pointed out while having build quality similar to acer shit.

It's cheap because no one wants it despite the fake paid reviews.
Frameworks on eBay actually sell for high prices because there's demand and people actually want them.

Kek. I'd bet my left nut asus sold more vivobooks than framework's entire lineup put together.
>Frameworks on eBay actually sell for high prices because there's demand and people actually want them.
Delusional. 2nd hand framework market is full of dissatisfied customers trying to recoup cost. Anyone who likes framework does exactly what you did, buy over market value because they support the message or goal.
2nd hand market is how I got my laptop for half the price of a framework. Once you have a 50% price difference there is no argument you can make that justifies a framework.

Framework is going for the low sales, high profit margin business. Hence why the aggresive shilling by Linus because it's much cheaper to get shilled by one guy. Nirav couldn't give less of a crap about availability since that means much higher budget needed to hire service crew/salesmen/running local ads across the world which equals much less profit margin.

I don't think I ever said anything about caring about a good deal. Before I had a Framework I had a ThinkPad W530 with the 5 year extended warranty and on-site repair.
Replacing your snsv shitbook is not a substitute for repairing it. If you've ever done anything you consider important on your computer you'd recognize that.
Or you might as well use a fuckin Chromebook and chain yourself to the cloud.

There's 3rd party stores for oem hardware online. I could even buy another laptop and use it as a donor if I really wanted to. Still cheaper than a framework topkek. You failed to repair a fucking thinkpad of all things, I'm guessing because they didn't have the picture books on how to upgrade your ssd like framework does?
>chromebook
Funny you mention that, because the framework chromebook was still more expensive than my laptop. Hell even a brand new m4 macbook air is cheaper and it's not a fucking chromebook.

Framework DIY costs a lot more. Used stinkpads and similar will end up costing less in the long run. Or you could just buy another unit and it will still be cheaper than buying FW parts.

early 30s here, software dev - i still like using my desktop for sure - but you can't beat a laptop for true portability. i use it to work in different rooms in the house sometimes, also allowed me to take extended trips without losing PTO. like i spent a week at a buddies, worked during the day, fucked around during the night, nbd.
in a few small instances i've done basic graphic design, photo, or video work, it's just easy to take a laptop and show and collab.

There are no products that maintain the portability of gaming laptops while also offering performance.
>framework 16
Ass cooling. Doesn't even pretend to be high performance
>thinkpads
Ass price/performance

The real stinker here is that we are not living in 2016 anymore. 1080p gaming has been unlocked by Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics, as long as the cooling isn't dogshit.
You used to be able to make the argument that gaming laptops offer a poor value judgement considering you couldn't even really game on them.
But now you can. It's not really your judgement call to make.

Thanks anon. I always preferred compartmentalizing work away from life stuff (separate user account on my PC even though I only used it to remote desktop into my work PC which was far beefier), and I even had a strict "don't fucking bother me outside of work hours" policy. PTO didn't factor into it in the slightest, it's regulated differently in my country.
I left the industry since then, the whole white collar thing is not good for my mental health, nor physical health for that matter.

Why the fuck did you buy an overpriced laptop like the Framework and not use a decent OS? The only people I see hyped about these are people working on things like OpenBSD. But even they lean hard on not buying one and getting a thinkpad instead. Modern thinkpads might not be as good as the old ones but they're still easy to repair and add parts to.

I looked at the framework and it's dumb. They're getting you to pay double the hardware is worth. Plus the "modules" thing is stupid. They claim you can swap stuff around as your needs change. But your needs won't change after you initially set it up. Plus now you're stuck buying their modules instead of being able to pick up cheap parts second hand from ebay and from chinks. There will also be far less second hand parts out there.

I'm sure they will go out of business at some point and leave you holding the bag. Or they'll do what all these companies do and produce overpriced bullshit for the next 10 years getting worse and worse as time goes on. Until they're basically the same as all other laptops at double the price.

I don't understand why all these companies offering Linux friendly laptops are so retarded and overpriced. All we want is something with open firmware at $500 or so. If someone did that they'd sell a bunch without having to shill.

Where is my fucking laptop with a trackball?

>SODIMM ram
This is why I bought an older thinkpad the last time I upgraded my laptop. It has soldered RAM but it still has a slot if you want to add RAM in. So I waited until one with the 16GB soldered RAM popped up then I added another 16GB in the slot. I figure 32GB will serve me find for a long time to come.

I hate this slim fad with laptops. The last thinkpad I got isn't that bad but if they get any thinner I'll refuse to buy another one. I want a fat laptop with a water proof case and a mechanical keyboard+trackball. The nipple is okay but it just isn't the same.
