Somehow it's 2025 and Steam doesn't support standard TOTP and requires their app for 2FA. What the actual fuck? This is even worse than Apple's vendor lock in, but at least Apple allows using SMS for 2FA.

I think it's more of a travesty that their retarded account system cannot allow (even if they wanted, from what I've heard, because it breaks shit) to change account usernames.

Considering KeePassXC has an option specifically for Steam's TOTP, clearly it's not actually a proprietary format or anything. Reason for the app is for their own features like push authentication but that's not strictly necessary nor is it exclusive to Steam

To be fair they implemented Steam guard before TOTP apps were widely used and it also does other stuff. But yeah it is gay they hide the secret from you.

You can either extra the secret from the app or directly use some cli tool to add authenticator and get secret.
I'm using steam with my TOTP app for years now. I believe I used https://github.com/ValvePython/steamctl
