That's the point of dark themes, genius, so the light is applied to the things you actually want to see and not the background. My god, I can almost hear how stupid you are over the internet. I bet it hurts somehow.

It's been proven that dark on light is better for reading comprehension, legibility etc.
You are literally not designed to see illuminated things on a dark background. When would that ever happen in nature?

>While dark mode may present some advantages for some low-vision users — in particular, those with cloudy ocular media such as cataract, the research evidence points in the direction of an advantage of positive polarity for normal-vision users. In other words, in users with normal vision, light mode leads to better performance most of the time.

Reading doesn't happen in nature
Screens don't happen in nature
Staring at bright screens is the closest thing humans invented to staring at the fucking sun

Staring at a dark theme is like staring into the sun. Points of blinding white light on a darker background. Dark theme tricks your brain into thinking the light level is low, so your pupil opens, then the bright pixels cook your retina. Dark theme will kill your eyes light staring into the sun. Light theme protects your eyes by allowing them to adapt to the actual brightness of the pixels.

When we all start using e-ink screens this will be true. Until then fuck off; white on screens isn't actually white.

The retina is made up of individual cells, each can be damaged individually. High overall brightness does not cause damage, point brightness is what causes damage. When you look at a dark theme, your eye adapts to the lower brightness level causing your pupil to open. This increases how bright individual pixels are when hitting specific parts of your retina, like the macula, which will be directly pointed at white text. So even though you might feel less eye strain, your retina is being destroyed by the blinding white text, retina damage cannot be felt.
