1717. Maximum Score From Removing Substrings

You are given a string s and two integers x and y. You can perform two types of operations any number of times.
>Remove substring "ab" and gain x points.
For example, when removing "ab" from "cabxbae" it becomes "cxbae".
>Remove substring "ba" and gain y points.
For example, when removing "ba" from "cabxbae" it becomes "cabxe".

Return the maximum points you can gain after applying the above operations on s.

Example 1:

Input: s = "cdbcbbaaabab", x = 4, y = 5
Output: 19
Explanation:
- Remove the "ba" underlined in "cdbcbbaaabab". Now, s = "cdbcbbaaab" and 5 points are added to the score.
- Remove the "ab" underlined in "cdbcbbaaab". Now, s = "cdbcbbaa" and 4 points are added to the score.
- Remove the "ba" underlined in "cdbcbbaa". Now, s = "cdbcba" and 5 points are added to the score.
- Remove the "ba" underlined in "cdbcba". Now, s = "cdbc" and 5 points are added to the score.
Total score = 5 + 4 + 5 + 5 = 19.

Example 2:

Input: s = "aabbaaxybbaabb", x = 5, y = 4
Output: 20

You CAN solve this, right anon?

Is it too late to enter this field as a 24 year old? Im beginning to realize my current field is a dead end and that I made the stupid mistake of following my dream to be a zoologist. Im just about to graduate so there’s no point in NOT getting my degree but I plan to jump ship once I have that certificate in my hand

Ive only taken JS and python courses; made some data sorting algorithms that could predict if wine was red or right by its contents, and did not much else.

I know im going to be competing with people who have been doing this stuff since they were preteens. Is it something i can pick up in months?

Where do I even start?

40% of software engineers in the us are immigrants. even if they were all sent back tomorrow i bet entry level would still be very competitive.

Alright, suppose I want to apply to some local-ish companies. Do you suppose its better to call or email them to ask if there are any openings?
On one hand, email seems low-effort and low-interest.
On the other hand, I feel like I'm more likely to be dismissed if I call in, since I'll be interrupting whatever they were doing at the moment and they probably don't feel like talking with some retard.

Also, would it be wrong to send such an inquiry to their "sales@company.com" email, if that's the only contact info available?

2322. Minimum Score After Removals on a Tree

There is an undirected connected tree with n nodes labeled from 0 to n - 1 and n - 1 edges.

You are given a 0-indexed integer array nums of length n where nums[i] represents the value of the ith node. You are also given a 2D integer array edges of length n - 1 where edges[i] = [ai, bi] indicates that there is an edge between nodes ai and bi in the tree.

Remove two distinct edges of the tree to form three connected components. For a pair of removed edges, the following steps are defined:

>Get the XOR of all the values of the nodes for each of the three components respectively.
>The difference between the largest XOR value and the smallest XOR value is the score of the pair.

For example, say the three components have the node values: [4,5,7], [1,9], and [3,3,3]. The three XOR values are 4 ^ 5 ^ 7 = 6, 1 ^ 9 = 8, and 3 ^ 3 ^ 3 = 3. The largest XOR value is 8 and the smallest XOR value is 3. The score is then 8 - 3 = 5.

Return the minimum score of any possible pair of edge removals on the given tree.
Anonymous No.106006547 [Report] >>106006578
>>106006537
Example 1:
Input: nums = [1,5,5,4,11], edges = [[0,1],[1,2],[1,3],[3,4]]
Output: 9
Explanation: The diagram above shows a way to make a pair of removals.
- The 1st component has nodes [1,3,4] with values [5,4,11]. Its XOR value is 5 ^ 4 ^ 11 = 10.
- The 2nd component has node [0] with value [1]. Its XOR value is 1 = 1.
- The 3rd component has node [2] with value [5]. Its XOR value is 5 = 5.
The score is the difference between the largest and smallest XOR value which is 10 - 1 = 9.
It can be shown that no other pair of removals will obtain a smaller score than 9.

Example 2:
Input: nums = [5,5,2,4,4,2], edges = [[0,1],[1,2],[5,2],[4,3],[1,3]]
Output: 0
Explanation: The diagram above shows a way to make a pair of removals.
- The 1st component has nodes [3,4] with values [4,4]. Its XOR value is 4 ^ 4 = 0.
- The 2nd component has nodes [1,0] with values [5,5]. Its XOR value is 5 ^ 5 = 0.
- The 3rd component has nodes [2,5] with values [2,2]. Its XOR value is 2 ^ 2 = 0.
The score is the difference between the largest and smallest XOR value which is 0 - 0 = 0.
We cannot obtain a smaller score than 0.

Can obviously be done in O(N^3): consider each pair of edges (of which there are O(N^2)) and for each one do a depth-first traversal (which costs O(N)) to compute the XORs of the three components.

Can also be done in O(N^2). Precompute for each node a summary value equal to the XOR of that node and all of its descendants (simple depth-first traversal, O(N) time). Also precompute the preorder and postorder number of each node, so you can check whether one node is a descendant of another with an O(1) range comparison. With these, when deleting an edge, you can find the combined XOR value of the two new connected components in O(1) time (or I guess O(C) or maybe O(C^2) where C is the number of connected components that exist so far, which in this problem never exceeds 2).

I feel like there's probably some trick that lets you get it down to O(N), but I'm not sure what it is. Maybe some kind of DP with the correct traversal order. I don't think the solution can be O(N log N) because the tree isn't guaranteed to be balanced or binary.

Isn't computing the XORs O(2^n)?

xor1 = node_1 ^ node_2 ^ ... node_n
xor2 = node2 ^ ... ^ node_n
xor3 = node_1 ^ node_3 ^ ... ^ node_n

For each possible component.
XOR is commutative but you don't know if XORing with less nodes will give you a better min/max.

A lot of boomers' only retirement savings is some undermaintained 401(k) that they can't retire with anymore after bidenflation. It's why you see a lot of workers in fast food and doordash looking like they're on death's doorstep. A bunch of them had to sell their houses too because they're too old to work but the money still needs to come from somewhere; the day of the pillow is basically a myth now.

O(2^n) looks big, but it's actually extremely fast.
You can interpret the ^ as a power function which would be big, but alternatively you can interpret it as a XOR.
Then when you bitwise XOR n, it's just a minor modification which reduces to O(n).

You need to think outside of the box.

You don't need to compute the XORs for all O(2^N) possible combinations of nodes. Since you always delete exactly two edges, there are only O(N^2) possible sets of three connected components. Since the input is defined to be a tree, it starts out as a single connected component, and each edge that you delete splits one connected component into two.

IT work is very boom or bust, so there will be periods of time where you will have to rely on contacts or work something else.
It took me a year to find a new job after being laid off, I worked at a cleaners and did small contracts for former clients.
Things will recover at some point, but the general problem, at a societal level, is that you have to go hard, but not to get ahead, just to not fall behind.

even if you grinded 40 hrs a week for a few years straight you will be average on market at the absolute best. you not having collaborated with others before will be obvious to people who interview you.
if youre going to do this anyway at least try making significant contributions to a FOSS project that people have heard of. doing this will be an extremely hard process but its possible you end up actually learning and networking with people. networking is the only way you are getting a job. i can just about promise you that.

The separators never change, so we can consider each block individually and add their scores up at the end.

Within each block, we will use up all the a's or all the b's, whichever are fewer. (This uses the constraint that x,y>0, which you didn't post but it's listed on leetcode.)
