For me, it was the 90s mercury sable headlights. Only now have chink electrics trying to emulate it, and doing it very poorly.

the aim of a movie is to look cool, the aim of the real world is to get stuff done.
in a movie, you make your computer interface do all kinds of neat stuff because its purpose is to interest the viewer. in real life, you make it look boring because all they're trying to do is find out something like "how do fish breathe water?"

In the 80s there was more room to dream about what digital tech could be so we chased those dreams. Today we have the hindsight that tech is just a miniscule computer chip and a rectangular screen. Maybe some rainbow lights and a rounded glossy bipedal robot that walks like it pooped its pants.

This is the problem itself. Everything is about muh productivy, muh metrics showing that rectangle buildings with flat faces are easier for pajeets to build. We no longer have Palladian architecture with those costly sculptures perched above it for no other reason than "it looks niice".

That thinking is what killed Ericsson and then Nokia. People want bling. They want to be seen. They want to hammer down the "importance" of green vs blue text bubbles. Work? Hardly.

When modern shit goes retro, you can't really say that the coolness factor comes from how modern it is.

Western societies have been succesfully deconstructed by the social engineers - economically, socially and anthropologically. Tech has improved, but everything else has devolved.
Nowadays I need to go to Asia to have that feeling of being immersed in a sane, fucntionnal society I had in the 80s.

oh come on, if you gave me a billion dollars i could robot waifus with mechanical meat which would be a bunch of small metallic pieces made to move like skin/flesh similarly to how a rig deforms a 3d model, the limit of modern tech is creativity but that's lacking nowadays.
