So I've had couple of different kinds of PC builds over the years, and while some builds I've not had the "top of the line" GPU (always some 70 tier card or something, but sometimes 80), I always seem to have problem with CPU performance in games, despite never having "budget" tier cpu in any of my builds, always mid-high or high-low tier, and my current is high-high from couple of years back.

So how come I get this feeling, that everytime I've played on PC, all the time my performance issues have mostly been because of CPU? I get this feeling I've always had some kind of "bloated" windows install, like too many programs or games installed, and that eventually it just always becomes slower, and I don't think it's to do with "background" processes or programs running in background.

What's the cause of this, is windows registry thing still a thing, or why I feel even in win 7 and win 10 era , the total number of programs installed seem to cause performance issues? It feels like I'm constantly CPU bound in my gaming, regardless of era of PC gaming I'm on.

Is there a way to optimize this shit, without doing some "fresh install" shit? I don't wanna be cpu bound anymore, I wanna be able to get good cpu performance in my gaming.

I have good gpu now, and CPUs have been very good. But what ends up happening is, any game that's even slightly CPU bound, creates a performance gap between my system and another system that's less bloated, meaning the bloat in my system means that despite if I have better CPU than other system, my system still regardless loses higher % of performance in a CPU bound game, than a game with worse CPU. I really don't understand any of this shit it's confusing as fuck, and makes me reluctant to invest any more money into a "system" (pc hardware) where its bottleneck (OS) can bring it all down so quickly

>(pc hardware)
I guess I meant to say PC ecosystem. I'm gonna start playing consoles from now on, cause at least with consoles the performance doesn't degrade like it does on PCs, and the expectation you set for it doesn't degrade, either, it manages to meet the expectation much better than overpriced PC with poor performance

Maybe try linux, it will give you better performance than modern pajeetdows . Sacred cow poo not go to waste

not helpful at all, there're games that struggle to get good performance even at 1080. I might have beefy amd gpu with 20+ vram, but none of that matters when the system is cpu bound due to os bloat

This is called "Winrot". Mac, Linux, and BSD lack this problem, and despite their own shortcomings, are more preferable if you wish to have a system that lasts more than 30 years, provided you are capable of performing adequate maintenance on the system.

That's literally it, and nothing more. Certain operating systems win in certain areas where other operating systems don't, and it's never something you should obsess over.

Consider what you use your computer for in 2025, take a look at what alternative operating systems may provide for you and compare it to your current system. Will this new OS be able to fulfill my daily needs without getting in the way of my workflow (excluding the first timer's learning curve that comes with learning anything new)? If none of these OSes can serve my needs correctly and has problems, which OS has the least problems? etc etc.

I may have to look into Linux more eventually, but I'm curious, are there ways to combat this winrot problem, especially without having to do fresh install?

I've had the opposite experience as you but I often manually overclock my ram and have my CPU perform 15-20% faster than people with the same CPU as me

just use linux. if you care about bloat, you cannot get any better than linux. with linux you have full control.

how do you know its bloat. have you done benchmarking? checked temperatures? is ram running at proper speed? did you buy fast ram?

Then it's bad software and you should find alternative software and/or workflows

I got better cinebench r20 single-core score (r20 test takes less time to run than r23) when in safe-mode, than when booted into my windows. I'm not exactly sure why, could it be that there's more than just software at play, since doesn't safe-mode disable some drivers as well
