Why should I, a windows baby, install Linux Mint instead of Ubuntu? Ubuntu used to be the distro for new users. So, why do people shill Mint over Ubuntu these days? What happened?

I think the general argument was 'Ubuntu is bloat'
How is this different from mint? No idea. Never understood the 'mint just werks' either, all the distros I tried, including Ubuntu, werked fine out of the box except one called LXLE or something like that, the installer failed on every PC I had at the time

You shouldn't use either of them. Mint's popularity is riding off 2017 memes and Ubuntu's popularity is riding off 2008 memes. All of the conveniences they pioneered in desktop Linux have long since become standard across all major distros, all without the outdated Debian base; there is no such thing as a "beginner distro" anymore, because Linux is just good now and there is no need to "graduate" to a different distro. Noobs and veterans alike will be totally happy with I'm not going to shill any particular distro because most of them do the same shit, with the use whatever the fuck you want desktop environment.

It's mainly the layout, but I have heard that Ubuntu can be a bit finnicky sometimes, but on the other end if you have AMD it does have the best first party support.

You need to make canonical account for proper support since 22.04. Programs installed with snap are usually slow to launch, but it's not that big deal if you have normal ssd, some people mind, some don't. Both are somewhat bloated, but you shouldn't care much about that because if you are new to linux you have no idea what to install anyway, it's just more stuff to test and play with... Mint is better for personal use, ubuntu for professional. Also I wouldn't recommend distros that use wayland by default to new users, so just install mint. If you don't like it, you can always switch to something else.

Windows users asking Linux users for a distro rec is largely hopeless, because the two groups often don't see eye to eye. Remember 95% of PC users just use their OS as a bootloader for google chrome, they couldn't give a fuck about GNOME vs KDE or snaps vs flatpacks. Either you have the patience to test and learn or you stay on Windows.

After a decade of Xubuntu, I installed Fedora Plasma 42 yesterday. There's been a bit of a learning curve, but so far, it's been a much more functional experience. Nothing has crashed yet and KDE functions and looks so good now. I didn't like the way it looked 20 years ago and had major stability issues the first few times I used it, so this is the first time I've used it since then.

Now I'm trying to set up a shared folder with Virt-Manager so I can transfer MS Office files with a Win 11 VM, but something's not working right and I haven't figured out what it is yet. I need Office for some things, LibreOffice is not a 100% compatible replacement yet, but I hope for that in the future. Also, Photoshop > Krita, as much as I like Krita.

>What happened?
Tablets happened. Windows ditched the desktop metaphor on Windows 8, and we all know what the clusterfuck that was, right? Wrong. Gnome chased that same path with Gnome 3 fucking shit so hard everyone forked it to a) keep gnome 2 (mate), b) make gnome 3 with a usable desktop metaphor (cinnamon), c) just fuck gnome and jump ship. Ubuntu chose c) and well double retard by making unity his own non desktop metaphor with weird tablet full screen app menu and assorted shit. That shit shat the whole flaming pile of shit that was linux, and from that shit came out mint which was ubuntu but with a sane desktop metaphor. That was when everybody jumped ship from ubuntu.

As for the jumping ship from mint I wasn't there when it happened, since after distrohopping out of my beginner's ubuntu onto mint, I just hoped away into arch, fedora, suse, centos. When centos was kill, I was busy working with the company's windows pc that I didn't even bother check what'sa good distro these days.

I switched from Windows 10 LTSC to Kubuntu last year. I am happy with it. I could probably use any KDE distro and be happy with it now. The only adjusting I'd really need to do is getting used to the package manager and frequency of updates. If I install something else in the future I hope the updates will not be constant. That's annoying.

>but all your packages are way out of date don't you want to be on the latest version of KDE why do you accept this blah blah blah

I don't want to reject all updates. I also don't want to run a distro where delaying updates could lead to problems. Not being constantly pestered by them is more my problem. Ubuntu isn't really that bad in that respect. They do seem to come in waves though. Like you'll get a bunch of security updates one day, a bunch the next day, a bunch the next day, then a fucking kernel update that needs a reboot, then nothing for a long time. If it's urgent it's urgent I get that. But I want minimal unnecessary disruptions.

>>106019077
It was time. Microjeet is getting worse not better. I can do 99% of the tasks I did on Windows on Linux. I can say oh well to the other 1%. While 10 LTSC is a damn fine operating system, which I cannot say about Win 10 Home which I ran before that, it's probably the last they will ever make. If I stuck with it when I got a new computer I'd just be kicking the can down the road until 2032. Time to tear the band aid off. I also think it's fucked up that the only way to get a version of Windows that isn't an unstable piece of dogshit is to pirate it. I'm now using something that's free instead. The stability is similar. I am comfortable with it.

Some more bitching about updates. Rather than just letting me choose the frequency of notifications how about only notifying me when security updates come out? That makes a lot more sense. Also what's the deal with apt always "deferring" updates due to "phasing"? Bitch if I'm updating just go ahead and install them all. I manually install those every time. Why waste my time installing that shit later when it's ready to be installed now? It's just stupid.

ubuntuu used to be the OS you installed for steam games showing up as the most used linux distro, but things have come a long way since and other distros have shown up to take that space.

I just want a pretty installer. EndeavourOS is Arch except it has a pretty installer and mostly the defaults I want anyway

I'm choosing mint for my proper main desktop because it's old hardware and I heard mint has the smallest overhead and is best for old hardware. I don't have time to learn arch.

Ubuntu I'm using for my media server because of zfs.

Let me ask that again and try my luck again. How do you update and upgrade an "end of life" distro?

>ubuntu is a server-grade distro aimed at devs and workers
>mint is a traditional desktop aimed at average joe

people shill mint because it purges snap, uses xorg instead of wayland and have an overall coherent look/feeling. also more people are shilling because left's favorite altright streamer; pewdiepie recently came out in support of mint

Altought I like xfce and atleast they're doing some work to move to wayland, probably cinnamon for more complete desktop experience. I recently tried different desktops on my arch install and have to say that there really is just 2 actually good desktop environments: Gnome and KDE. Well never tried Budgie desu

Generally you will be leaving one retarded company (Microsoft) to join another retarded company (Canonical).
They just keep doing retarded shit. Use whichever you want, I personally would not use Ubuntu however.

Bro anything that uses systemd is backdoored. You are welcome. By backdoored I mean they can see into your system. There are so many backdoors that they can choose from once they have that information itโ€™s not even funny. Do you have Spotify installed? That has a know backdoor that they refuse to close because itโ€™s what they use to serve updates and they wonโ€™t patch it. Your cpu has backdoors all by itself, they just need to be able to read what tpm version you have first.
