Why doesn't Firefox directly distribute its mobile APK and only make it accessible on Google Play

How would you navigate to these links from Chrome without knowing about them beforehand?

I wouldn't

google mozilla ftp
you'll get ftp.mozilla.org instead of download.cdn.mozilla.net but both work fine

Let's say you didn't know about the link at all. How would you find out about its existence? It's not anywhere on Firefox's front page, which only redirects to Google Play. It doesn't even mention it in passing.

So I need a redditor to tell me about it instead of Firefox putting a visible link to it?

That link doesn't show up when searching on mobile. Instead there's a different one that again only redirects to Google or Apple

The link is literally nowhere on Firefox.com or even Mozilla.org except for one support article from 2 years ago which may or may not show up on the first page of Google.

I heard this puts penis photos on your disk so I'm not using it, if you click the logo 10 times it shows you a huge penis with the text "how's this chocolate" written in impact

Normally you don't need a redditor to tell you where to find the download link to a program. You can usually find it by digging around the official website or github, which isn't the case for the mobile version of Firefox.

The only way to get to this link from Firefox/Mozilla that I've found so far, is to open "Support" and search "apk". There is a 5 year old bug report about this issue, last active 7 months ago: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1663735

There's no way to know about the apk except for a reddit link and mozilla support link that may not show up on the first page of Google.

Oh yeah, I suppose you could also find out by asking on 4chan. Or any forum really. My point is that download links to software should be easy to find on the official website. I'm not so much interested in "the link" as I am in "how to find the link on an official source", which isn't supposed to be difficult or obscure in the first place.
