No, he is right, several countries do have laws requiring data to be safe. The only thing is that it doesn't need to be state of the art, the standard is set by laws but the standard base is a reasonable man in charge of his own business. For example the US and banks still use floppy disks but ofc that data isn't easily accessible by outsiders so it actually IS safe from hacking as long as it is not networked, you need physical access to it

If the article is about marital statuses, then "single" and "married" are fine, albeit oversimplified, categories to use. They are valid categories under the Census Bureau, which provided the underlying analysis by the Commerce Department and Wells Fargo Economics.
