Laptops are inferior for everything but portability. If you don't have a workstation waiting at work, you'll need a laptop. The only other non-retarded reason to need one is a lack of money.

if you want a desktop, plug it into a monitor and have an external keyboard/mouse
if you're doing something and want to lay down to go somewhere, you can pick up right where you left off

desktop would only be for work requiring a lot more power, which I don't need

eventually hope smartphones get powerful enough and have enough support to just be my main computer, where I can just slide the phone into a laptop chassis and use it as a desktop – currently the DeX/pixel desktop mode isn't good enough for my liking

It would be nice to just do everything on a single device

better consider wether you really want the mobility at the cost of a premium price, reduced capabilities because of the format, thus thermal envelope;
lesser longevity/reusability because you cant have carry-over parts between builds

you can carry over a ton of stuff. storage, psu, optical drives if you use em, gpu, screens
