I have been working for 4 years now, 3 as a Data Engineer, and it came to me that I don't want to spend the rest of my life in front of a screen. It's not that I hate it, in fact I love it, but something feels off, like, everything I do has no meaning at all.
I want to open a gym one day and be the cool manager that uses the facility too. Maybe start a chain even. From now on, I will keep working in tech until I save enough and jump start my new dream.

If only that would make me financially secure. What good is God given talent if it's only going to lead me to exploitative jobs that wreck my mental health? When I told my dad I wanted to do computer shit when I was a little kid he said "manual labor never hurt anyone" but obviously he was wrong because he hurt his back and got laid off. But I kinda see what he was getting at now. I long for a life with no pressure, no deadlines, none of that fucking shit. If I didn't have anything to lose I'd go back to just being a fucking loser. I think it's better than this.

Anyone know how the fuck to get out of this?
Getting into a position with more seniority is impossible because you have no leadership experience.
Anything less than that and you get a 30% pay cut because your company pays so well.
But your company also doesn't want to promote you into a leadership position so you won't gain that needed experience.
What do?

Windows is okay but also kind of shit. One Microsoft project which I think is actually good is TypeScript. Some of their other products piss me off though. VS Code is okay but because it's Electron it's bloated as fuck. Meanwhile there's Sublime Text which manages to be cross-platform without Electron, it's far more lightweight, and you can add language servers to Sublime, giving it similar functionality to VS Code in many cases.

It would depend what product you work on. Obviously, if it's any kind of desktop app, you'd have a Windows laptop. But even if you work backend for a web service, a lot those services run on Windows IIS, so you would need a Windows machine to build/test and run locally.
Yes, you can run .NET Core and later apps on Linux, and I've done it, but many Microsoft products predate that (by decades).

Well that's not the issue. I could imagine if you were strictly frontend web development at Microsoft, you could get by with a MacBook. In fact, some of those engineers probably should be using MacBooks to verify compatibility across OSes and browsers. The product I work on has a frontend component and a backend. I don't know what the frontend devs use. But for us backend devs, we have to use Windows because the application runs on Windows Server instances on Azure and is compiled on Windows instances into .NET 4.8 DLLs using MSBuild, so most of us use full Visual Studio on Windows. Some people try using VS Code, but our .NET solutions have like 100+ csproj files each so that can be hit/miss depending on the task... Even full VS chokes on me like twice a day.

TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript which adds static typing, and it compiles into JavaScript. So you no longer have to dig around trying to figure out what type is expected by a function.

I have a PhD in chemistry and make decent money for my area (very stable job) but I'm considering picking up programming as a hobby with the hope that it could eventually turn into something more lucrative than what I'm doing now. I see stories about AI technologists making 9-figure salaries and wonder if it's possible for a person at my age (38) to pivot all the way in this direction.

Is there any point in trying to do this in my 30s? I'm very good at self-teaching things (that's what a PhD requires). I also don't have a family (massive incel) so no wife/kids to take up my time.

When I started in my job, it was more of a free-for-all where all devs did front-end and back-end development, and everyone did deployments. It eventually started to get more specialised where the team I was on started handling all of the DevOps and deployment stuff and significantly reduced the amount of front/back-end work we did. At some point they also hired dedicated front-end people.

Our development teams basically got split across product functions, so there was a finance team that handled the money aspects of the software, then there was a data-esque team that did reporting, etc. The biggest difference was the platform team that was doing DevOps, deployments, infra, etc. that wasn't not really any specific product area.

Go to the adopted subreddit and everyone is saying how horrid adoption is, but the few people I know personally said they love their parents and don't even think about the fact they were adopted.
Heck, look at all these news articles about birth rates and cost of living. People that are lacking complain, people that arent are usually invisible.

Its all relative. I make $90k as a fully remote engineer (non senior) and even with expensive rent, I have more money than I know what to do with because I have zero debt, minimal expenses outside of rent, etc.
While I know people who make $150k-200k who are constantly teetering on the brink of being completely financially broken.
$90k can still go a long way depending on where you live, your lifestyle, etc. I've got 45k in savings, 10-15k in a checking account at all times, 60k in a 401k and another 15 or so tied up in crypto.

Plus, tech salaries are actively getting crunched if you aren't AI / ML. $90k is going to be the norm soon enough.

I make 150k$ as a IT network technician surrounded by people making 120-160k. Lifestyle creep is the real killer. Even with most of us being good at saving money/investing and reinvesting in our careers alot of people really do not move out of debt maxing unless they take that money to pay off debt first. If they skip paying off debt as the first thing they do when making more money then they end up in more debt due to the increased credit card limits.

My rent is $650/month since I live with a friend. No debt either. I can't even spend all the money I get unless I tried really really hard to do so. Meanwhile I have a friend who makes slightly more than me and he's on the brink. He has a low mortgage and a car payment even though his old car was fine. i honestly dont get how people spend so much money. i understand capital stuff like a house or new car or whatever but even if you go on vacation you can get away with having a week or two of very good non-poorfag fun on like 5k. i go out drinking a lot but physically cannot consume more than 100$, i would puke violently and end my night long before spending that much. and new phones are LITERALLY free, every phone plan you get to replace your phone for some new piece of rage inducing black glass every two or three years and the cost of the phone is built into the plan on top of being heavily subsidized by the phone company

and in terms of magic number 90k in my neighborhood i do not know a single person who makes that much. personally i made around 65 before ceasing full time work and lived very comfortably in one of the most expensive cities in
canada
It depends, lookup a rent vs buy calculator. Interest rates are currently 6-7%. When you buy a house on 30 year mortgage you put 20% down. Houses appreciate on average at 5%. You could put that same money in a total stock market index at 7%. Its very likely your yearly rent is less than 2x property tax. You can get out of a rental easier if laid off. You get raped for 10% when you sell a house. Boomers didn’t lower their prices when rates went up. For example I rent a place currently for 3x less than what my mortgage payment would be for the same place.

housing is a meme, it doesnt make yo money unless you rent it out. not even boomer crying about having to do maintenance or pay taxes; housing is bubbling now and land is massively over-valued. prices are insanely high and somehow climbing, but most houses on the market have been there for over a year. you are likely to be unable to flip your house, and if you intend on simply living in it, then you can start boomer crying about having to do maintenance and paying taxes eating into the "equity"

the pro gamer move right now is to buy a townhouse and rent it out, but NOT on airbnb (many cities are starting to outlaw it or at least impose restrictions that make it no longer an infinite money glitch like it used to be just before/in early coof)

Guess I'll rent then. I dont know how long I'll live with this guy. He doesnt seem like he's gonna get married or want to kick me out anytime soon.
I've had too many bad experiences with actual apartments or renting from strangers that id rather not anymore and those guys always find a way to screw you.
Who knows what the next few decades will hold...

don't get me wrong, owning a home is good and all but if you're just in it to have "equity" you're a retard and in fact borrowing further against a house or using the house as collateral is how a lot of people perma-fuck themselves later in life

it also depends where you live. here in canada, a lot of rentals are also so insanely overpriced due to jeet pressure (they pack them 90 to a room so collect the same 100$ 90 times, so the average landlord now demands 9000 in rent for a whole unit) that a mortgage is cheaper. but at the same time, the housing market is so fucked due to chinese pressure that using a house as a financial instrument is suicidal and you may as well invest in something else

Friends and work don't match very well.

> online friends 2025
Yeah it doesn't work that well anymore. Most of the younger millenials are now 29-35, and the older zoomers have completed college. A 9/5 drains time like nothing else and if you have a girlfriend / boyfriend (possibly even kids) little time remains. I've met some people from /g/ discord groups but that's about it.

Whenever I'm in office I do very little and just doomscroll 4chan, discord, sometimes watch youtube vids and pretend to be sociable with colleagues. I'm the most boring person to talk to since I usually avoid any sensitive topics.

9 figs in AI? No, it isn't even possible for people that I encounter with PhDs, multiple publications, decent h-index. I see these people apply for data scientist roles that are making the same as backend dev / data engineer roles. For data engineering you only need a cs related bsc and maybe some certs to get an entry role.

>>106119648
I've encountered a guy with a phd who worked at Oxford 3 years postdoc and Stanford 2.5 years postdoc. He applied to a very basic data analist position that required sql + power bi knowledge and preferably some database / automation / cloud knowledge. Data science / AI as a field is cooked man. Skip that phd and stick to a bsc, maybe a msc if you fancy management positions after 5-10 years.

Don't go into data science. Do a cs degree and instead learn about databases, cloud, basic statistics maybe some advanced statistics but data science is worthless in 2025. There's just a glut of phds with postdocs, some with business experience that will take up the jobs and there are too little jobs for those who missed the boat.

teamblind is more for bitching about the company in a thinly veiled scheme to let you bitch about coworkers

surprisingly, it didnt become bitching about coworkers and instead is just jeets dickwaving about how many rupees they make and duping westerners because they dont realize that 100k rupees is fuckall and has the local purchasing power of about 50k dollars, probably less

I think thats part of our issue with talking all the time. We agree on a lot of stuff so we talk about sensitive stuff quite often but thats when we start being quieter.
But mostly its just video games or whatever. Before I worked with these guys i never talked at work.
