I have been working for 4 years now, 3 as a Data Engineer, and it came to me that I don't want to spend the rest of my life in front of a screen. It's not that I hate it, in fact I love it, but something feels off, like, everything I do has no meaning at all.
I want to open a gym one day and be the cool manager that uses the facility too. Maybe start a chain even. From now on, I will keep working in tech until I save enough and jump start my new dream.

Getting into a position with more seniority is impossible because you have no leadership experience.
Anything less than that and you get a 30% pay cut because your company pays so well.
But your company also doesn't want to promote you into a leadership position so you won't gain that needed experience.

Windows is okay but also kind of shit. One Microsoft project which I think is actually good is TypeScript. Some of their other products piss me off though. VS Code is okay but because it's Electron it's bloated as fuck. Meanwhile there's Sublime Text which manages to be cross-platform without Electron, it's far more lightweight, and you can add language servers to Sublime, giving it similar functionality to VS Code in many cases.

It would depend what product you work on. Obviously, if it's any kind of desktop app, you'd have a Windows laptop. But even if you work backend for a web service, a lot those services run on Windows IIS, so you would need a Windows machine to build/test and run locally.
Yes, you can run .NET Core and later apps on Linux, and I've done it, but many Microsoft products predate that (by decades).

>and will inevitably be used by a roastie on a windows box
Well that's not the issue. I could imagine if you were strictly frontend web development at Microsoft, you could get by with a MacBook. In fact, some of those engineers probably should be using MacBooks to verify compatibility across OSes and browsers. The product I work on has a frontend component and a backend. I don't know what the frontend devs use. But for us backend devs, we have to use Windows because the application runs on Windows Server instances on Azure and is compiled on Windows instances into .NET 4.8 DLLs using MSBuild, so most of us use full Visual Studio on Windows. Some people try using VS Code, but our .NET solutions have like 100+ csproj files each so that can be hit/miss depending on the task... Even full VS chokes on me like twice a day.

TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript which adds static typing, and it compiles into JavaScript. So you no longer have to dig around trying to figure out what type is expected by a function.

Anybody here gotten GCP certs?
I've got AWS Solutions Architect - Associate and I'm angling to get 'GCP Professional Machine Learning Engineer', unsure whether to go for an associate cert first or go straight to the professional.
I have a PhD in chemistry and make decent money for my area (very stable job) but I'm considering picking up programming as a hobby with the hope that it could eventually turn into something more lucrative than what I'm doing now. I see stories about AI technologists making 9-figure salaries and wonder if it's possible for a person at my age (38) to pivot all the way in this direction.
Is there any point in trying to do this in my 30s? I'm very good at self-teaching things (that's what a PhD requires). I also don't have a family (massive incel) so no wife/kids to take up my time.

Yeah but it's also effectively useless and it costs money to take the exam.

Its all relative. I make $90k as a fully remote engineer (non senior) and even with expensive rent, I have more money than I know what to do with because I have zero debt, minimal expenses outside of rent, etc.
While I know people who make $150k-200k who are constantly teetering on the brink of being completely financially broken.
$90k can still go a long way depending on where you live, your lifestyle, etc. I've got 45k in savings, 10-15k in a checking account at all times, 60k in a 401k and another 15 or so tied up in crypto.
Plus, tech salaries are actively getting crunched if you aren't AI / ML. $90k is going to be the norm soon enough.

Even with most of us being good at saving money/investing and reinvesting in our careers alot of people really do not move out of debt maxing unless they take that money to pay off debt first. If they skip paying off debt as the first thing they do when making more money then they end up in more debt due to the increased credit card limits.

Because once you own the house, you only need to worry about property tax and thats way less than a years worth of rent.

and in terms of magic number 90k in my neighborhood i do not know a single person who makes that much. personally i made around 65 before ceasing full time work and lived very comfortably in one of the most expensive cities in
canada
It depends, lookup a rent vs buy calculator. Interest rates are currently 6-7%. When you buy a house on 30 year mortgage you put 20% down. Houses appreciate on average at 5%. You could put that same money in a total stock market index at 7%. Its very likely your yearly rent is less than 2x property tax. You can get out of a rental easier if laid off. You get raped for 10% when you sell a house. Boomers didn’t lower their prices when rates went up. For example I rent a place currently for 3x less than what my mortgage payment would be for the same place.

housing is a meme, it doesnt make yo money unless you rent it out. not even boomer crying about having to do maintenance or pay taxes; housing is bubbling now and land is massively over-valued. prices are insanely high and somehow climbing, but most houses on the market have been there for over a year. you are likely to be unable to flip your house, and if you intend on simply living in it, then you can start boomer crying about having to do maintenance and paying taxes eating into the "equity"
the pro gamer move right now is to buy a townhouse and rent it out, but NOT on airbnb (many cities are starting to outlaw it or at least impose restrictions that make it no longer an infinite money glitch like it used to be just before/in early coof)

it also depends where you live. here in canada, a lot of rentals are also so insanely overpriced due to jeet pressure (they pack them 90 to a room so collect the same 100$ 90 times, so the average landlord now demands 9000 in rent for a whole unit) that a mortgage is cheaper. but at the same time, the housing market is so fucked due to chinese pressure that using a house as a financial instrument is suicidal and you may as well invest in something else

9 figs in AI? No, it isn't even possible for people that I encounter with PhDs, multiple publications, decent h-index. I see these people apply for data scientist roles that are making the same as backend dev / data engineer roles. For data engineering you only need a cs related bsc and maybe some certs to get an entry role.
>>106119648
I've encountered a guy with a phd who worked at Oxford 3 years postdoc and Stanford 2.5 years postdoc. He applied to a very basic data analist position that required sql + power bi knowledge and preferably some database / automation / cloud knowledge. Data science / AI as a field is cooked man. Skip that phd and stick to a bsc, maybe a msc if you fancy management positions after 5-10 years.
Don't go into data science. Do a cs degree and instead learn about databases, cloud, basic statistics maybe some advanced statistics but data science is worthless in 2025. There's just a glut of phds with postdocs, some with business experience that will take up the jobs and there are too little jobs for those who missed the boat.

I've been working on some open source software, ran mostly by eastern Europeans, but they even have jeet tier code now. If you build a fix for them, like a proper improvement on their garbage code, they complain that it's too bespoke, or that it anticipates tech debt which they aren't sure will happen in the future. And then they accept some other fix which basically just hacks the exact same thing I built, but in a non reusable way in a single component, so you know that in the future you'll end up with multiple implementations in different spots.

I've been posting "gm sirs :sun:" in a few Discord servers I'm in. Years ago, people I had used to work with posted good morning messages in Slack and I just carried over that tradition to a Discord server I have. Recently, I had decided to expand the tradition without being asked to into other people's servers. Some people are receptive to it. Some people are incredibly offended by it. One woman keeps banning me for it, and since I'm mates with the owner I'm immediately unbanned and let back in to post another "gm sirs :sun:" message the next day. This woman's reaction was so visceral, it had made me think about the monotony of day to day life. I basically do the same thing over and over again. I wake up, maybe I go out for a walk sometime that day, maybe I end up at a library, but I always end up at a computer working on my own projects. It's like I'm living on repeat and the expected payoff is that I'd eventually be able to break the cycle and do something with more variety. A lot of people's lives resemble a kind of formula, something that do day-to-day that's familiar and safe. Occasionally it's broken up by an outing of sorts. My life is far more routine and predictable. The reason is because I believe the more time I invest into my own projects, the greater the payoff will be (both in terms of financial independence and fulfillment). If the majority of a person's life in the modern era is built on routine, it makes this woman's hostile reaction more baffling. She *hates* being reminded that a new day has begun, she *hates* being reminded of the passage of time, and by extension she *hates* being reminded of her own dwindling mortality. Of course, I'm assigning a 2deep4u meaning to this. The real reason she's offended by my "gm sirs :sun:" messages is because I've undermined whatever semblance of authority she has in her life and she's being told to fuck off in a Discord server she moderates. Caroline, if you're reading this... gm sir :sun:

I think the reason why I had enjoyed watching The Osbournes Podcast all night during an acid trip is because there's a banality to it that makes it appealing. The core attraction is listening to an elder rockstar react to modernity, such as his daughter asking him what "based" is. The reason why I had found it so interesting is that it for me that it's the simulation of listening to my own family aimlessly discuss mundane topics and swap anecdotes. It was surprisingly comfortable to watch at 1AM. I'm an only child so it was also something to help me imagine what it would be like to have sibling, an idea I was interested in that evening.

But you'll have all your bases covered by doing the CCNA? There might be some stuff in the CCNA that's cisco specific while in N+ or whatever it's vendor neutral but you will know absolutely fuckall about real world problem-solving no matter what cert you get so its pointless to worry about minor shit like this.
>What did you start at.
I started at the CCNA because it was obvious to me that it's better to spend a few months more to get a cert that has at least a bit of value than to drone through multiple Comptia certs that are essentially worthless.

Yeah cover the basics, learn but don't bother getting certs for A+/Net+ then get Sec+(government requirement) then get CCNA after that you can focus on specialization. Alot of newer techs lack the basics and it hurts their chances of getting a job due to interview questions starting with simple shit. Which also weeds out brain dump testers.

Graphic design is definitely not. Advertising provides no value today and if you saw my LinkedIn page for the alumni I went to college with you'd think it'd be better they started sucking cock on the street because it would be less humiliation. The course made it feel like we would go on to do shit like in madmen, but with tech and internet it turned the Don Draper's into unemployed MLM peddlers.

It's contrarian because there's a difference between chasing money at the expense of all else and being paid a shit wage. Even if you can survive on 60K, if you have options and/or the job is holding you back/you deserve better then you should go get another job.

What is your expectations/resume/location/social/leet code skills? Don't answer, just reflect on that. Because if you did crap in college/don't have a tech degree/no connections/live in Midwest, 60K is good (for me at least). If you were a genius with a great resume/living in Cali, 60K is shit.
Ultimately the answer is who the fuck knows, we are a diverse group. You gotta answer it yourself. All I can tell you is start job hunting come next year for a better job (or be like me and get blessed with 14% yearly raise)

"Like a lot," understatement of the century.
The other location opens me up to the possibility of moving state (that office is just over the border) BUT moving house isn't so trivial and there's never a guarantee that job will be around forever. So it's a gamble of
>stick to the burbs where I can fall back on minimum wage shit if the entire economy goes tits-up, but suck up pisisng away seven+ hours a week
>throw the dice on moving to God's country where the property taxes are slashed and I can own guns, and justify it with work being right there
And that's before I've even applied and given them a chance to send me a rejection email.

Not really anymore. There's zero reason to take a risk on someone that didn't follow the cursus honorum correctly, and if you took a detour into the wrong jobs or companies, you're assumed to be a retard.

My friendships with most people in my life I've felt have always been in a precarious position, as if they were on the fringe of collapse at any moment. I partly believe this is due to the dynamic and varied nature of people. Some people you drift apart from, some outgrow you and others you outgrow. In my case, I believe there's an additional and volatile factor at play and it's how I interact with other people. I've always been an outlandish but reserved person. I believe this combination is often interpreted at apathy and sometimes even antipathy directed personally at whoever I'm speaking to. It's a combination born partly from a neurological disorder and partly from feeling alienated during my formative years. The people who I'm close friends with are universally those who are open to new experiences. The reason is because we're able to rapidly bond on niche interests that are not frequently discussed among most people. It also allows whatever social deficits I have in how I present myself to be interpreted as quirks rather than something malicious. Unless you're somebody who has been vetted as distinguished somehow (be it in character or achievement), the more idiosyncrasies you exude the more threatening you appear to somebody who is not high in openness. Without social proof, drifting too far from social norms is more likely to earn you the label "weird" than it is "maverick".
