Self hosting appears quite rare. I have met plenty of people who use third party homeservers that have maybe a couple hundred users. Many of these homeservers require an application to join that needs to be manually approved by an admin. This is a similar practice to a number of fediverse instances, and serves as a method of filtering low IQ retards who might not be bothered to read the rules. Incidentally, I've also noticed some fediverse instances that also host a matrix homeserver on the same domain.

Have you see how many maximum users the python server can handle? It's less than 100. Matrix never really sees this as an issue because no-one fucking uses matrix.

I've looked over 'discord alternatives' and while matrix is probably the best overall one, it's still a slack clone. And it's barely functional.
Next best is rocketchat, which is way more functional, but is proprietary and while you can self host you are still cucked by the vendor.
Teamspeak 6 might be good but that isn't out yet.

I've been using Element since it was called Riot, both personal and professional chats, pretty much every hour.
The reference client is utter dogshit where half the features are broken one day and the other half are broken on the next update.
And everything is inconsistent. I really like how they have 2 different ways to do video calls and 2 different ways to handle audio files.
It's really funny that old dead software like MSN messenger could handle those things better and even let you send multiple images at once that rendered as carousel gallery, all without taking up 500MB of RAM while idle in text chat.

I can only hope one of these years someone gives enough of a shit to improve things. Whether that's on the Matrix side, the XMPP side, or something else. There's no reason chat clients and servers should be as shit as they are today.
