My dad wants me to install Office on his new computer. The thing is I never know what version to settle on, I don't want it to be full of Microsoft bloat, but at the same time it shouldn't be so old that it's missing important features. Is 2010 a good idea? I won't try to convince him to use some FOSS alternative, the last thing I need is him getting "old man angry" at me if something doesn't work to his liking.

Just get a cheap Professional Plus 2024 key... half of the businesses my MSP works with don't want to pay for 365 and it works fine with everything, not too much bloat.

been there, done it,
don't fall for the old office meme, 2016 is the best.
Anonymous No.106125157
2010 is the last version before they started introducing telemetry, onedrive, etc. if that's what you want
however 2016 is pretty much what Microsoft has been building on top of for its entire 365 suite. Probably what I'd recommend the most for him

2016 is still supported (till October) and slightly less janky than the 365 crap. 2010, on a new machine, is a bit dated now but it should still work fine.

Pretty basic everyday home stuff, maybe I should've started with that. Probably Word & Excel and nothing else. And even then some basic editing, nothing fancy.
Anonymous No.106125223
Excel predates the other Office products in that screenshot. Use Edge or Internet Explorer for an e.
Anonymous No.106125231 >>106125240
I just downloaded and MAS unlocked the most recent one.
Why bother? It's just an office suite for writing some letters. Who cares.
Since i am on Win10 LTSC, there is no OneDrive bullshit it could use. Had no issues.

Get 365 and get the version without Copilot

What version are you on? The most recent one before 365, whatever that is, or older?

2001 or 2003. Anything beyond that is pozzed.

Don't give microjeets money. Not even if it's the same price as a McDonald's value meal.

aside from obviously just installing any random ms office suite because i doubt he would care, i unironically recommend him trying abiword and gnumeric. top tier for simple shit. they aren't so different to microsoft tools that someone i assume is at most changing font size and manually clicking every cell in a spreadsheet
Anonymous No.106125287
2016 doesn't get upset at me for not logging in even with ohook like 2019+ does all while still being "modern" so probably that version

Use "Office Tool Plus" and configure 2021 LTS, it works perfect and doesn't have the aids that the newer ones have

Interesting. Is Office Tool Plus better than the regular activators, KMS/MAS/whatever? It kept showing up when I was looking into portable versions. The latter seem like more trouble than they're worth, at least from my quick testing.

Meant to say the portable Office versions, not the activators. I worded it weird.

Its similar to masgrave in that it'll activate it and ur good if I remember right. it just fucking works though I've deployed it with a config I made on my parents system when I was visiting, to this day it works fine.

heres the config, not sure if the path at the top needs to match but thats just where I had it extracted. https://pastebin.com/nB31QC7H , just save it as an .xml file and load it, should be a couple clicks to install and ur all good.

LibreOffice is inferior to MS Office. But I'm not paying for an Office subscription. And the "one-time" purchase just doesn't seem worth the cost...and I'm a cheap bastard.

>I won't try to convince him to use some FOSS alternative
Do the one time purchase from MS ($200 USD?) and be done with it. Buying "bootleg" versions for your Dad is going to be more trouble that it is worth (buying for YOUR personal use is fine).

Lol, I remember using Word 2.0 and didn’t even use all those features.
I ended up buying my dad a mac, and getting office 2010 for it which still works fine to this day.
I have no idea what features might be in new office documents, I’ve never had a problem with any documents except for ones that some auditors sent me to fill out containing ActiveX things in there.
Being a developer, I sent them back with my own ActiveX controls embedded in the that did things.
Never heard back from them.

LMAO, listen here, KEK
if he can't even install office himself, then he isn't capable of utilizing it "to his liking", and he certainly won't notice a "missing critical feature"

Save your inheritance getting pillaged by a bot net, and install libre office.
He won't be able to tell the difference

It's not that he can't install it himself, he's as hesitant as I am about what the best version is, that's all.

Office 2010 is the last comfy version of office. Beautiful UI, no/minimal spyware, fast because power was limited (Devs couldn't go full retard like now), and all the features you need are there.

All microjeet installs are comped
Get with the program, boyo

Install Linux or open bsd on his shit and give him libre office or opon.ffice or wtf ever
Anonymous No.106132516
Skip MS Office and just install OnlyOffice. Or if he needs macros and niche features just install 365 and massgravel it. The Copilot shit won't work as you need a real license for online features.
