You can't enter any discussion online mentioning him without a swarm a kidult fanboys who have zero clue about 3D graphic rendering techniques and behaving like there were no 3D graphics outside of gaming and even in gaming before John wrote Catacombs 3D. Oh sorry, I forget most of fanboys don't even know Catacombs 3D ever existed. To them Wolfenstein 3D was the 1st time ever ANYONE implemented raycaster and a peak 3D graphics on PC. And DOOM was when Carmack invented BSP and was the most 3D of 3D gaming. And in Doom Carmack invented moving 3D models and span buffer. And ****OH I'M COOMIN*** TEH M E G A T E X T U R E technique used in RAGE so unique and so powerful that only John could have invented it!

CAD on PC? They never heard of it. DOS flight sims? Does not ring a bell. Ultima Underworld? System Shock? Are these punk zines? What do you mean that span buffers predate IBM PC??? Whaaaaat? Megatexture been done earlier in satellite photo systems?????

>Carmack invented 3D video games that you could play on your garbage wagie cubicle computer in 1994
Not exactly true, in early 1994 most garbage wagie cubicle PCs couldn't even boot DOOM, or wouldn't run it at playable fps.
When DOOM first came out in December 1993, it required a fairly beefy PC to run at playable fps.
However PC consumer tech was advancing so fast during the 1990s, that just 1 year later that beefy PC that could run DOOM in day one had been demoted to a toaster, and 1 more year later it was a potato.
This is why many people get the dissonance that "back in the 1990s any potato could run DOOM". While it's sort of true, it was definitely not true back in the first half a year or so since launch.

From the few interviews I've listened to, he mostly said that all the stuff he did was "back of the envelope" or some similar phrase type stuff, as in the actual code that does the "crazy" stuff is only a few lines. And he talked about how most everything he did was done with math the average high schooler would know.
Overall, he never came off as arrogant to me, just someone that is very excited to talk about his passion, and boy can he talk about.

Half-res and viewport shrinking are such terrible compromises that they're pretty much useless, and even back in the day no one really used them.
In half res mode the graphics become so pixelated that most of the time you can't even see where you're going or what's shooting at you. Combine that with shrinking the viewport and it's unplayable territory. When you need to use half-res, or shrink the viewport more than a couple of - presses to get playable fps, you're off playing the SNES port or even the 3DO port.
The maximum I could tolerate was pressing - a couple of times to shrink the viewport a little. Me and people I hanged out with at the time used to agree that if you needed more than that the game wasn't really playable.

The BSP tree is a legitimately powerful optimization and even now is relatively obscure but when he applied it was a pretty advanced concept.

Yes Elite and other games had fairly fast 3d rendering but none could have complex level geometry like Quake had with contemporary hardware.

I mean yeah, he isn't god, but he's still an intelligent programmer worthy of respect. Researching existing techniques, understanding them, and consolidating them in working code isn't something most developers can do, especially at 19 with something as complex as graphics programming.

If hit with the
>"Bro, I want stairs in the middle of the room"
requirement, 95% of devs would just produce stuttering trash and tell you it's impossible to optimize; they wouldn't start reading academic papers to find an algorithm that works and then implement it. I work with niggers like this and the lack of ambition is infuriating.

he made a name for himself primarily by making good games, though the technology was good as well. id made some of the first smooth scrolling games on pc, something not trivially done on pc's of the time as they lack any kind of hardware scrolling like consoles did. and they popularised the FPS genre (exemplified by the fact that for years following the release of DOOM, such games were regularly called "DOOM clones" before the term FPS was made)

>>106132196
This. The reason wasn't features though, it's because the Doom engine was made to be fast. System Shock ran slow, and it's gameplay is much more plodding as a result. Doom ran fast. Same with Wolf 3D. There were games like it, and in many ways more featured well before it, like >>106130929. But it's slow. Runs great in an emulator though.

gaming magazines used to hype the fuck out of him and they thought he was a genius. it all fell apart after quake when people realized he had taken some math published in some research paper. and then the "what the fuck?" comment in released code that demonstrated that they had no idea how the fast inverse square root was done. it just worked. turns out john and media tried to take credit for it when it was another employee that created it.

tl;dr: john is literally a midwit and nothing he did was original.

carmack is overhyped by Gamers(tm), but he is still a smart programmer.
BSPs (and a map editor for it), lightmaps, authoritative server-client side prediction networking. the source code for Quake is also super clean, the cvar/console system in it is cool, QuakeC is kind of cool. His Doom 3 and Rage stuff kind of sucked though. stencil shadows and mega textures are meme tech in hindsight.

but desu you can say this about almost all programming stuff today. all the cool stuff was discovered in the 60s/70s by academics. hardware got faster to make it practical.

The basics of 3D are actual dead simple:
(x,y,z) ==> (x/z,y/z)
You can immediately do point-3D with that. With a line algo you have wire-frame 3D. Then you need interpolation/re-sampling and textures to do Doom-style 3D.

Yes, this shows how much more powerful average modern coder could be if he actually starts reading related literature - computer architecture (CPU and memory related stuff), algorithms, computer graphics - both 2D and 3D, also operating system concepts like virtual memory, memory allocators.

But heck modern coders start sweating and screaming at you when you tell them that knowing just ONE programming language may not be the brightest idea to build your entire career on.

In the '00s it was still shunned to know just one. When you tell that to youngest millennials andyounger they look at you like you are insane psycho grooming them into having sex with their pet turtles.

I think you're misremembering. John never tried to take credit for it. When asked about it he said he didn't remember where it came from.
It wasn't necessarily another employee either, you're thinking of Michael Abrash, but really it was just published in a paper some time before. Either one of them could've read it, and I don't think Abrash ever spoke about it that I recall.

And Carmack himself always said that he was just more well read than most programmers.

Stencil shadows were fantastic for the tech of the era, they've just been superseded due to advances in hardware.
Megatextures were neat imo, but mostly from an art standpoint. The engine had built-in painting tools and layers. You could paint lightmaps, diffuse, normals, spec all as layers. It looked really fun to work with. And I think the game is beautiful if you're not humping walls. They really should've released a higher res expansion somehow, but I think the download would've been 20GB which was absurd at the time. Should've released it as a torrent.

it's a lot easier today than it was back then. it's not like today where you can ask chatgpt to write you a BSP implementation, you had to go to a university library to read the papers and then implement it from the shitty description of a nocoder academic.

>Lower readability
If you need a static modifier in order know that a variable is global, then you're doing it wrong.

>lower room for optimization
Adding a static modifier a global variable would not magically make the code more optimized. In all likelihood, it would have zero effect on performance.

>name conflicts
Name conflicts would happen regardless of whether or you use the static keyword if the name is already used elsewhere.

Try again, genius, without using chatgpt.

From Masters of Doom:

>Scott Miller wasnโ€™t the only one to go before id began working on Doom. Mitzi would suffer a similar fate. Carmackโ€™s cat had been a thorn in the side of the id employees, beginning with the days of her overflowing litter box back at the lake house. Since then she had grown more irascible, lashing out at passersby and relieving herself freely around his apartment. The final straw came when she peed all over a brand-new leather couch that Carmack had bought with the Wolfenstein cash. Carmack broke the news to the guys.

>โ€œMitzi was having a net negative impact on my life,โ€ he said. โ€œI took her to the animal shelter. Mmm.โ€

>โ€œWhat?โ€ Romero asked. The cat had become such a sidekick of Carmackโ€™s that the guys had even listed her on the company directory as his significant otherโ€“and now she was just gone? โ€œYou know what this means?โ€ Romero said. โ€œTheyโ€™re going to put her to sleep! No oneโ€™s going to want to claim her. Sheโ€™s going down! Down to Chinatown!โ€

>Carmack shrugged it off and returned to work. The same rule applied to a cat, a computer program, or, for that matter, a person. When something becomes a problem, let it go or, if necessary, have it surgically removed.
