ecms are compressed images, bins are raw binary data and typically have a cue sheet with them to tell programs what to do with said raw data. As far as I know ecm compressed images are really old and you should maybe find a better source of rips if that's what you're dealing with. I personally prefer the bin/cue format over straight ISO, but either works.
