Wait so they pretend like they invented adapters and made it so that theirs fit flush with the computer and its "modular" now? How is this any more configurable and plugging in a dongle or something?

Wow you cracked the code. It's a money gimmick there, philospher king. You'd have to pay hundreds and carry around 10 modular shitslabs where a $4.50 usb c multihub/card reader dongle from ali express would do.

Its just usb-c after all as well.

Your a moron if you think this
>have busted/worn out port on regular laptop
>requires micro soldering to replace
>have busted/worn port in framework
>replace the otherwise toolless module

IDK why people miss the point this hard on the modules. Busted ports are common in laptop repair. The modules are sacrificial to stop even more costly repairs.

Bruh, this one not only costs over three times what an equivalent dongle would but it doesn't even fit in the damn laptop and thus missing the point of these flush modules.
Even a little usb-c to usb-c extender you need to use the port normally costs 10$. Wtf is this scam haha.

>>106148240
>The modules are sacrificial to stop even more costly repairs
repairs are not more costly than a couple of these modules.

If you really want to spare the ports you can just use a dock when you need to plug in a billion desktop peripherals. Has been done this way since for ever and worst case scenario is one usb-c needing replacement. And with many laptops you get multiple ones anyways.

Why do you need to be disingenuous and ignore responses to protect a pro repair feature?
Its literately just a grift. Something common sense pro repair would be connecting ports via ribbon cables to the mainboard allowing for simple but not gimmicky replacement. Charging 45$ for and usb-c to ethernet adapter (that doesn't even fit) is just a scam on top of an already overpriced product.

Because if you don't want their modules, you can just use type C, you still get the benefit of the sacrificial modules which is the primary purpose of them.
You seem to be seething because framework isn't exactly what you want, that they didn't design them for every port possible under the sun.
The crop of flush mount modules serve enough needs when you need a port on the fly. If you want the framework as a desktop replacement you use a dock like most normal people.

buying a new laptop and wasting precious and rare resources to not spend a little over 100$ on an port replacement at an shop is not worth it over just buying a comparable used laptop for half the price. You still save on port replacements and are also more sUstAiNaBlE and are also owning le corpos buy not buying new shit and using old stuff until its true end of life.
>You seem to be seething because framework isn't exactly what you want, that they didn't design them for every port possible under the sun. You are being disingenuous, again, because there is just no defending a grift.
when did i say that it has too little options? Not once.

What i am saying is that its retarded and overpriced for what it is. There ARE methods for simple repairs. I CAN even just switch out the usb-c board in my phone when the port is broken instead of overpaying for some modular gimmick port. You CAN just switch out parts in the steam deck without soldering. And all of this still costs a fraction of what these framework gimmicks cost.

I mean the base version of their newest laptop has 8gb of ram in 2025 for crying out loud. Its the same shit apple is pulling for making you pay more for a proper version. Its just a grift riding the right to repair wave like i said before.

>Comparing apples to oranges now.
You brought replacing ports up and said its right to repair. I said you can do the same already without paying the framework tax. How is this apples to oranges? Its the same thing. replacing ports. Just one technique involves soldering or ribbon cables and the other usb-c "modules".
>framework isn't worth it because of used laptops then any new laptop isn't worth it, you don't even need to bring framework into the discussion.
Oh its especially not worth it. Not "pro right to repair" laptops offer the same specs at a lower price. You may have to go to an repair shop to change a port but even that is still cheaper than what this is.

And nice ignoring everything else i said. Of-course an right to repair flavored apple drone doesn't have to capacity to think. These things literately have no use case. They could have made a normalsish laptop without glued in batteries or the usual anti repair things but 45$ ethernet adapters. Come on.

>Not even Thinkpad cultists are safe from zero access to fresh battery.
And yet they are somehow doing fine. Also they do this without paying double for an equivalent laptop because some grifter said that you can do this very basic thing with their product also.

There actually are sorta selfless companies trying to do something different.
But we are witnessing grifting in real time instead. Again, they are doing literately the same shit as apple by even trying to sell you a laptop with 8gb of ram for 1200$. This simple practice literately invalidates any good will they might have had.

Has nothing to do with Apple, which is even more overpriced.
It should come standard with features like cat plug ins and thunderbolt.
People want the ability to repair their own motherboards and screens without proprietary shit.
The T480 is the closest we're going to get.

These serve a completely different purpose to USB Ethernet dongles.
These use the controller in the laptop, keeping the same MAC address.
This is important for corpo/gov use where port security may be handled by MAC address ACLs
>>106148047 (OP)
They are literally just dongles anon, the "revolutionary" part is that they fit /inside/ the laptop, rather than having to carry them around in a bag and unplug them every time you need to put the laptop in a bag/sleeve.
>>106148415
Every single one of these modules is cheaper than paying a board repair shop to re-solder a port. Ignoring price entirely, you also straight up don't need to send your laptop off to get repaired, throw in a spare module or just buy a new one.

I know this is a bait thread, but by god OP you're so retarded that you're doing a really good job of baiting.

>dongle obsessed weirdos chimping out again
at work we use Dell 5510/20 laptops and they have at least 3 USB A ports, HDMI out, two USB-Cs, a smart card reader, SD slot, and onboard ethernet. What more do you need

we use docks for them at people's desks but when they're issued out for WFH most people don't ask for anything extra but a wired mouse

I know anon, but yeah, thanks for that correction. I hope that RISC-V will be more functional soon, I think that's the only realistic chance that we'll get open-source hardware as well.

Wait so they pretend like they invented external dvd drives and made it so that theirs fit flush with the computer and its "modular" now? How is this any more configurable and plugging in a dongle or something?

hardware does not have "source" and by grace of being a physical object in your spessman hands you can modify it to your heart's content, limited only by your skill and other equipment

that's not source. that's a datasheet/circuit diagram. "source" is a term specific to code

Almost every piece of hardware with the design files publicly available describes itself as open source.
There is an entire organization specifically dealing with open source hardware

It's a solved problem.
It's called a dock station.
