laptop trackpads are comfier than using a mice

I agree but only if they have three physical buttons, modern monopanels are no good since it's unreasonably unergonomic to click and drag. I used a thinkpad with 3 buttons on the trackpad for several years with no mouth, plenty comfortable even though the trackpad was quite small. Can't do it on laptops made these days so it's back to a mouse like a caveman.

Only good thing compared to actual mice is that they allow me to use my left hand every bit as well as my right hand; doesn't feel ackward or clumsy at all.

I disable trackpads and exclusively use the trackpoint.

meanwhile the idea of buying an external trackpad is still just niche enough that as far as I'm aware, no one wants to make a wireless 2.4GHz one. only bluetooth
and that pisses me off

You wouldn't be worried about arthritis, you'd be worried about carpal tunnel. Point forward with your index finger with your forearm parallel to the floor then repeatedly raise and lower your middle finger. You can literally feel within a few dozen reps that that action is where most of the strain is coming from.
