/tpg/ - Thinkpad general
Previous thread: >>106062220

Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series (especially X230, T440p and T480, those are the best pads for bucks) if you want the Real Business Experienceβ„’
Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook)

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards, tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium roll cage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>Excellent Linux & *BSD support
>Trackpoint (why the fuck wasn't this in the general before? that's the only reason to get a thinkpad in 2025 honestly)

Nostalgia i think. Im coming from HP shitware looking at thinkpads rn and they all seem like shit and completely opposite of what reddit and 4chan shills. T14 g4 soldered ram and wifi, t14 g5 FUCKING SOLDERED WIFI. They shit on E series while it has 2 ssd slots, not soldered ram and wifi.

Thinking of getting a Latitude E6400 because they have internal flashing support for Libreboot and because they're cheap. I know they're terribly outdated, but is there anything else I should know about them before I bite the bullet?

theyre really nice machines in terms of build quality, serviceability, that square edged generation was distinctly when dell was on top of the business market
downside, the screens suck ass
even the good ones are washed out, mediocre backlights, they just dont look great

if i could get a reasonable IPS panel into my E6410 id pay out the ass for it

Thanks for the input. I will only know how much their screens suck when I have one, but generally I don't mind screen quality, so I think it'll be fine.

Rich people don't spend exorbitant sums on depreciating assets. It's not a tool that makes me money so it doesn't demand a premium expense.

So Thinkpad bros, I'm looking for a laptop that is
-Modular: Has lots of removable parts like a keyboard, disk, RAM and SSD slots.
-Long Lasting: Has a relatively fast CPU
-Cost Effective: Isn't over 2k.

For context, I decided to pick out a 1990's Toshiba 220CS and was flabbergasted by how good the oldfags had it. You could just pop out the keyboard without even needing a screw and could easily access everything. I've searched far and wide but found modern computers have less and less modularity. The ones that do mark up parts as high as possible. I've been considering crafting a cyber-deck with common desktop parts, as it might be the only way to really get what I'm looking for.

No, are you stupid?
That's 400€ for a 4yo Ryzen 5 DDR4 laptop, that needs another 200€ worth of additional investment.
Look around on other sites or wait a few weeks until a non-sussy seller sells one on ebay at a reasonable price.
