My parents had just gotten divorced when my mom bought us a family computer. It was neat first but that divorce spiralled her to alcoholism so I can't even think of windows XP era without getting PTSD symptoms. Then again it never really got any better.

It's your mom being a piece of shit that caused the divorce not the other way around.
I was quite miserable at that time too so I'm not sure I'd live it again if I could.

The startup sound used to make me so anxious and afraid, I can only guess because I knew it meant I had to do work. Meanwhile Windows 98 never did because I'd just boot it up to play games.

Not putting this on my mom fully, my dad is a narcissist. Really emotionally heavy. They are both people who shouldn't have had children. All in all I'd say it's 60-40.

Good. It was slow and buggy as fuck, and did nothing Win2k didn't in half the memory and disk space.
When /g/tards shoot their baby duck loads all over XP, they're not doing it over the gold code - it's SP3 they're romanticising, which came out years later when hardware had caught up to this pig.

Windows XP would cause me to spiral into alcoholism as well, especially if I was troubleshooting an IT problem for some poor fucker who decided to run it on their machine. In terms of security, it's notoriously full of more holes than Swiss cheese. Run it offline and side load apps from a flash drive. Only hook online using a proxy or VPN and if you you clearnet just run Firefox with the right settings and give it the benefit of the doubt. What's this thing with it being hacked "as soon as you connect it to wifi" this is an outrageous claim that zoomers came up with to LARP a knowledge of technology like they are some hip goth emo hipster nerd like in those animes with the nerdy kid with the big ass glasses typing in a terminal app on a desktop like he's a member of My Chemical Romance or something to that effect

the darker colors made vista's visual style easier to look at imo, and they hadn't yet dumbed down the taskbar for touchscreens

that claim comes from a youtube video in which a windows xp install was connected to the internet and people misunderstanding what he did (he allowed anything to go through without any firewall, which you'd have to go out of your way to do, thank the nsa for not disclosing eternalblue btw)

i don't think everyone necessarily had an older computer back then, i had the very first intel mac mini and (after the firmware updates that added support came out) it ran windows xp quite nicely, my cd is for sp2 and sp3 didn't exist yet at the time

When was Windows XP released again, anon? Hell, when was XP SP2 released?
And remember, this was back in the days when computers doubled in speed every 2 years.

Windows 98 was still supported until 2005. Its never been a good idea to try and run new windows versions on an old PC. If the machine came with 98, you stuck with it until you got a pc built for XP. Something with 512MB of RAM and a 2 GHz processor would run XP perfectly. Even 256MB was fine for the first two service packs.
