FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
Usage: paste into Powershell, run.

>and Office?
Same method, use Ohook
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

>backup your user's AppData (plus the system's ProgramData) folders and keep them somewhere safe
>additionally backup your User's Documents folder - in case you have games' savefiles stored there and such
>cherrypick subfolders (in AppData's case, subfolders in Local(Low) and Roaming) to copy back from when you get Windows running
>reinstall programs back, and make sure they use configuration already existing in the right paths.
Don't expect it to be bullet-proof, though. Take Chromium-likes, for example: certain browser profile files like Cookies, Passwords or Local State are protected with the old user's DPAPI secrets, thus importing them as-is will fail.
>though if you restore the old user's DPAPI master key, set the right registry keys for migration preparation, and launch the DPAPI Migration wizard (dpapimig.exe), you should be fine
>https://sourceforge.net/p/keepass/wiki/Recover%20Windows%20User%20Account%20Credentials/ - it's a KeePass-specific guide, but the general idea stays the same
Not to mention the "Secure Preferences" JSON protecting the profile folder from being tampered by malware. It's tied to the machine SID.
https://chromium.woolyss.com/#secure-preferences
https://www.adlice.com/google-chrome-secure-preferences/

Otherwise make sure you have your offline installers ready, use DISM or PnPUtil to export all of your drivers installed so that you can import (and install) them back.

I built up a new fresh computer and I'm trying to be better with file organization for my creative projects (Blender, After Effects, Photoshop, etc). What I used to do was have two big folders (one for Blender, one for everything else) on my desktop for each program and organize projects, resources, etc in folders within those folders. Kind of chaotic but it makes sense to me.
Couple of questions. Does having that stuff on my desktop instead of a different directory make things slower? Also, does anyone have any words of wisdom/resources to share for better and faster file management for creative processes? I feel like I generally have the hang of it but there's always ways to improve.

I did that and I'm having a lot of trouble with it. I set it all up, it loaded into grub like it should etc. but the next day it stopped working. Not booting with no signal to monitor and boot LED on, removing the windows drive makes it work again but being unable to access the bios I can't even change the load order or anything...
From the brief time I had it working I moved the Linux drive on top but I think it reverted back to windows on top after checking again.

Modern Winhoes can still require reinstalls if a Cumulative Update malfunctions and corrupts core system components. It has happened to me a few times each with both Win10 and Win11 since 2020. I'm lucky that my Ubuntu 22/24 install on its own machine has fared better, but I haven't used that computer as much. My Windows7 install that was on my Ubuntu machine hasn't needed a reinstall, but I only used it a few months before backing up the drive image and then replacing it with Ubuntu.

I used a common and widely accepted linguistic colloquialism that's used when referring to bypassing official means of software activation. You don't have to prove common parlance because it's common. You're just being anal and semantic because you have nothing better to do than argue on an anime website.

A crack that gives you a legitimate license doesn't really sound like a crack. If Microsoft doesn't want this they could easily remove MAS from github and update windows to detect these activation methods and deactivate every installation using them. Hell they could permanently ban your device from using HWID activation.

I've been having an issue that has stumped me for a while:

Sometimes when accessing folders, performing file operations or playing games off of HDD, the system will 'hesitate' or pause for a second before continuing. Note that this is 2 x HDDs set up in a RAID 1. Both HDDs are brand new.
This also happened on my last computer, same RAID configuration with different hard drives.

Sorry guys, I w

It really did take 40 minutes though. Probably my shitty asrock mobo which automatically tries to download all drivers on first setup.

But it actually installed correctly and booted after a restart. So I just upgraded some firmware and wiped the drive afterwards. and my bios now has a better looking font too! But w11 is still as shitty as I remember. Takes half a second to open menus, taskbar still unmovable. Also there's copilot in the LTSC edition too KEK. Microsoft shills are okay with and will defend this.

Sorta, but no. It's an "embedded" edition, and while server is a type of embedded role, and LTSC can be used as a rough-and-ready server, it has (artificial) limitations that a proper Windows Server SKU doesn't.
In reality, LTSC is meant for things like ATMs, medical equipment, POS terminals etc., where it's stripped-down nature and low-impact update policy can shine.

Registry contains font rendering configuration (HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop):
https://github.com/bp2008/BetterClearTypeTuner/wiki/ClearType-Investigations
Additionally there are font rendering settings that pertain to WPF applications (which the desktop composition part of Windows may or may not use them, also): {HKCU|HKLM}\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics

Wild guess - is that a (QD-)OLED display you're using for the new PC? ClearType was made with LCDs in mind, by the way.

Windows tonemaps SDR content to HDR by strictly following the standards, the problem is that monitor manufactures have basically never followed the sRGB standard and so display some colours brighter than they strictly should be. Actual media will display "correctly" because it will be tonemapped by the program/player itself (I hope you are using a decent media player!) and so the only subpar experience is the desktop.
Your options are
>use a colour profile like https://github.com/dylanraga/win11hdr-srgb-to-gamma2.2-icm
>turn HDR off when not viewing media
>get over it

Try resetting Windows Update components: quick way is to stop the wuausrv service, remove (or rename) the SoftwareDistribution folder in %SystemRoot%, and start the service back. Reboot the OS, for safe measure.
Next time Windows Update starts up, the folder will be recreated along with its DataStore. Hopefully it will come back to its senses and have the update queue deliver stuff that is actually applicable to your system.
>otherwise try scanning the component store health to see whether it's fucked up and windows randomly thinks you don't even have the 21H2 enablement package installed
>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth in elevated prompt should kick the scan in, repairing the store when it detects corruption
>ultimately just hide the update with wushowhide lmao (or one of those other windows update front-ends like WUMT or WuMgr)

You did some nasty hack to the registry or something so you could "upgrade" to LTSC from a GAC SKU, didn't you? Suffice it to say, you've left Windows Update completely confused as to what it's actually running on, and berko results like this are to be expected.
Do a full reset of Windows Update (there are batch files online for doing it, that automate what >>106235288 suggests, plus a whole lot more that needs to be done), and hope for the best.

What's the use case for IoT Enterprise LTSC (because muh hecking updates) when microsoft can at any point auto update your PC with an update that locks you out of your computer and encrypts your data without giving you the password if they consider you an enemy of the united states government?

I don't use LTSC, but because it's a business SKU, meant for fairly important applications (ATMs, medical equipment, etc.), and is administered by someone with actual competence, those things don't happen.
The issues you see with GAC SKUs aren't usually Microsoft fucking things up - it's some Dunning-Kruger retard with a memescript who hasn't got a clue what he's doing.
This only affects LTSC insofar as the aforementioned idiots are increasingly installing LTSC, then fucking it up the same way as their previous GAC install.

What's the use case for Linux, when the pseudonymous bedroom-dwelling loser with an anime avatar who managed X distro's app st^W^Wpackage repo troons out and starts distributing packages that delete your home dir if your locale is set to ru-RU?
Microsoft is a gigantic company - not to mention litigation target - if something like that happens. Aforementioned loontroon will just disappear, and the remaining distro maintainers will just pass the buck until it gets lost, while their distro goes down the gurgler (that is, literally nothing of value is lost).

What does the ms account have to do with anything? You do realize windows updates that are the reason you use LTSC are fully proprietary and have full access to every part of your machine and you have no idea what they do and they could just activate the killswitch to encrypt your data from you and disable you access to your pc. Why not just use Windows 10 22H2 Enterprise / IoT Enterprise and disable updates fully (if you think that's unironically possible kek) and not worry about it? Or just accept reality that you will never own your data and PC if you use windows so might as well use Windows 11 Pro and have compatibility with everything

I agree that MS is pretty competent, there's nothing wrong With GAC W11 Home/Pro 24H2 for the average user beyond some annoying nagging getting you to use their ecosystem, I just find it funny that people unironically think privacy or ownership is achievable on any version of windows. Just dual boot linux and windows, use W11 Home/Pro for proprietary apps, and use Debian/Arch for libre apps and having privacy/independance on your own machine.

Here in the real world, you don't have customers and you don't have a business if you abuse them like this.

The reason for the misinformation is that "IoT" was part of that movement to get it running on ARM processors.(like the Nokia phone. they were worried about Android / Chrome OS) And it got picked up by the hobbiest community with the Rasberry Pi that put the axe into it.
Lots of jeets spawn camping digital life forums and reddit since their only job at MS was to reply to people to tell them to reinstall.

If you want to really see how small and trimmed down Windows 10 can be look for a WinRE environment ISO (mind the viruses though) containing an absurd amount of software.. With the only limit being it shuts itself off after 3 hours.

This.. also a trick I learned back in the day still has me worried. Anyway to block incoming "tee" commands? (I was thinking of nesting a Win 10 Server to build an AD just so it can make sure it "owns itself".)

Which probably means I deleted something when I installed way back when. But everything seems to be working fine, as far as I can tell the security updates have still be downloading and installing correctly, so I guess I'll just leave it as is.

Even Microsoft disagrees with you.

"The Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) is designed for Windows 10 devices and use cases where the key requirement is that functionality and features don’t change over time. Examples include medical systems (such as those used for MRI and CAT scans), industrial process controllers, and air traffic control devices. These devices share characteristics of embedded systems: they are typically designed for a specific purpose and are developed, tested, and certified before use."

Not the absence of the term "IoT" anywhere in that passage.

>0x800F081F
>CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING; source for package or file not found, ResolveSource() unsuccessful
Well, it does signalize that there's something odd with installed (or rather partially) CBS packages in your system, with how it complains about missing source files that it couldn't even get from WU/WSUS (make sure WU recreates its data store first before running the command, unless you used the /LimitAccess switch to forbid any WU/WSUS contact in first place)
Make sure you see what's the matter in %SystemRoot%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log: Ctrl+F for the error identifiers (additionally the ", Error" string for any other errors), and check their surroundings to see what might cause the ruckus. Expect the logfile to be yuge.

If it was some modified Windows image with removed components, be it nicely or like a brute, that would explain it.
You'll have to pass over the /Source: switch to that command, with the path directing to an alternative repair source (pure unmodified for best results):
>WIM image folder mountpoint (or path to a known-working Windows installation of same version and build): path being directed to its root, its Windows folder or the WinSxS subfolder
>sxs folder in the install medium (this really pertains to offline-installing .NET 3.5)
>path of a windows .WIM image with the right index - e.g. D:\sources\install.wim:1 - choose the right index no. for your current edition

Anyway, here's the relevant MS documentation that you might wanna check: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/installing-updates-features-roles/fix-windows-update-errors
Then again, I might just be too pedantic and shit actually works fine when you reset WU and that phantom feature upgrade no longer appears. If it werks, it werks.

I don't want them doing squat to our computers. locking us out? forcing Account activation? huge fucking dis-service to humanity

Listen, you seem knowledgeable enough. I should probably say forcing all those schools, business and people to "buy more" or "upgrade the hardware" to keep them on the enshitification treadmill is really damn stupid. Just like Apple. Just like Google. Just like Broadcomm. Just like IBM.

As a former MSCE I can tell you my foolish NT 4.0 certifed but thought MS was going to bring us to a better tomorrow. But considering how much I paid for those prometric tests and Billions of manhours Microsoft has fucked over all of mankind GLOBALLY because they want you as a Tenant in their "cloud" and to make you the product. Get in yer XBOX pod and eat zee bugs!

If they really are "losing monies" then they should have done the right thing and released the source code and put it in the public domain for everyone to fix.

Anyway heads-up to anyone using $OEM$ Folders: https://massgrave.dev/oem-folder

"However, in Windows 10, IoT Enterprise editions were not included in the Enterprise category list during the installation process. As a result, Enterprise with an OEM key can handle setupcomplete.cmd, but IoT Enterprise (LTSC) cannot. This was fixed in later Windows 11 versions.
In Windows 10 IoT Enterprise (LTSC), you can resolve this issue by using the Non-IoT Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC ISO. In this case, the HWID method in preactivation will install the IoT LTSC key to change the edition and enable HWID activation."
