AI right now is a big poker game
the winner is going to take everything
that's all anybody is really playing for
not to pay their investors back in the event of losing

also I don't think this guy even cares about that
the AI winner is going to be more powerful than all the world countries combined
and whoever controls it will effectively be the new king of the world
and this dude is definitely running for antichrist

You guys realize we could have had an entire 'nother year of 4o and nobody would have really complained? We're upset because 5 is worse than 4o, not because it's only marginally better. They could literally just rollback tomorrow if the situation got that dire. This is a PR disaster but that could be recovered from; they already were ahead of the competition with what they had before this.

Since I already have xitter and I don't want to pay $200 a month just to be able to access the model(s) I want, and also don't want to help enable them during this PR disaster, I am trying grok anyway in the meantime, without expectation or investment.

He is in trouble if it turns out these other models are better, because then even a rollback may not be enough to regain users' lost trust. The bottom-line is that he is going to very quickly discover that putting profit over having a large userbase and the foremost reputation was a disastrous exchange.

He's already backpedaled today by letting $20 a month have 4o access, but that's not going to be enough as many people have already publicly cancelled from the sheer audacity. He's going to be forced to capitulate even more over the weekend, because he literally cannot afford to shed users more than he can't afford to keep losing money to them. Even if you have what you call "the best model", what good does that do you if the consumers have gone elsewhere now? It's untenable.

Tell me, does it make sense to you that they offer only two payment plans, which literally only differ in having an additional 0? Do you honestly believe that they are monetizing it correctly as is? Such that this move is the only one that makes sense and is worth enacting at the potential expense of reduction in marketshare.

no, the whole approach was incredibly foolish. it's like they only have tech people working there. other than sam, whose only idea of marketing is manufacturing hype.
as to the payment scheme, didn't they say at one point that even the $200 plan was costing them money? and that only around 10% of their userbase were subscribed at all? I don't see how it's possible to ever make the financials work if that's the case

It all would seem to suggest that Sam and his team have no knowledge of how to market designer/luxury/premium goods and services to big spenders.

I believe they are also neglecting the *brand* here. Apple was a lifestyle under Steve Jobs for the affluent and aspiring, and became one of the topdogs of its industry. OpenAI is a first-mover and has 0 prestige or impulsion towards brand loyalty besides being the first one many people have used. It's Spartan, utilitarian, unhype.

The more you think about it the clearer it becomes there's a gaping hole and blindspot in the decisionmaking arm of the company when it comes to attracting more paying users, one that should be easy enough to solve by reference to precedence.

AI is pretty useful, but the scale demanded by LLMs is absolutely unsustainable.

Especially since their entire strategy is to get people and organisations so hooked on the technology that they can eventually do the rug pull of "okay, now you are so dependent on us, you have to pay us THIS now" and I'm not sure they'll reach that point soon enough to get away with it.
Pretty much copying the strategy cloud employed in the 10s, but cloud is more affordable to deploy and they were able to raise costs slowly.

The issue is that the cost-to-effectiveness ratio of LLMs is absolutely abysmal and the only thing proving any significant improvement of it are claims of people like Saltman and "scientists" hired by them to make theatrical show looking like a serious research in eyes of retarded mobs.

That's because these companies are operating at a loss to establish presence. Eventually they'll have to charge more for the service instead of $20 a month. But people are willing to pay far more than that.

Its so hilarious when some obvious retard like you giving armchair "obvious" advice.
OpenAIs issue is that their product is already outrageously expensive and the premium tiers are already steep steps.
Youre going from 0, which is a lot better than even 1c, to 20$ for a product that does the same thing just a little better, then to TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS A MONTH for the same product again a little better.
Tell me how many people have ANY sort of subscription for 200$ a month, thats a very short list.
Ultra expensive SaaS with a free tier thats not ultra scuffed has never worked, and if it were ultra scuffed people will simply switch to another LLM, which is why there is no easy way out for them
