The way Linux handles running out if RAM is laughable. No popup that says "hey you're out of ram", no killing high usage applications, no, the default behavior is literally just to start gigaswapping and freeze the system.
Anonymous No.106193698
I don't have a swap partition it just shuts down the application.

The amount of times some bloated jeet-coded javascript ran out of control on firefox and caused my entire system to come to a screeching halt to the point where I can't even switch to a TTY because there isn't enough RAM to register keyboard inputs is fucking absurd. Get your shit together Linus.
Anonymous No.106193780
Why would you be running out of ram?

Is a meme OS. Even if it gets popular and serious work is put into it it'll just get raped by hackers and turn slow and bloated anyways. You will never escape slow, bloated operating systems and software. Ever. Give up.

Nigger half the world's servers and smartphones run linux, how much more popular does it need to be?

I have never used a distro where the OOM killer works correctly. The only time I ever got the oom killer working was on a preconfigured vps

Servers are more desirable targets than PCs, anon.
It's on most the servers.

more than half, atleast +80%, and the other ~20% is mostly freeBSD stuff like freeNAS and pfSense.

also more than half, android is more popular worldwide. And apple's operating systems, including the one in their iPhone is running the darwin kernel.
UNIX-like operating systems won. Wintoddlers, like OP, are pathetically spewing nonsense.

yeah, it's not a trivial problem, especially when you don't know the target workload. direct your concerns to your sysadmin.

Pixel 2 used to do HDR in software by merging several raw images, which would use hundreds of GB of RAM. so you could take a picture, swap to your messager to send it, and the background processing would get COOM MURDERED, losing the image. good shit Google.

using a computer 20 years ago was a vastly better experience with considerably slower processors and less ram.
being a ramlet isn't the problem, letting jeets into the west is.

may i suggest you move to the bsds for your potato computing needs? i installed openbsd 7.7 which is the latest, the installed system takes less than 30 mbs of ram and support for 32 bit as well as more niche architectures seems like it won't go anywhere

Op is a retard, but might as well ask: why does the oom killer kick in whenever I pacman -syu? Like I guess it's doing some massively parallel bullshit and tries to use all my (substantial) ram, so the system has to start reaping elsewhere (usually firefox, which granted is probably using half said substantial ram). But shouldn't it not do that? Isn't having the OOM killer kick in regularly a bad thing?

Why don't you submit a patch to the kernel if you think it should behave differently? It's free software, Linus doesn't owe you shit.

The problem is linux swaps out exactly what it's NOT supposed to. It swaps the pages of memory of small files which contain the code to handle various stuff instead of swapping the pages of data which haven't been accessed in a long time.
