>even when idle, a UPS wastes energy
A UPS isn't just a battery; it's an AC > DC > AC converter running all the time. This conversion is never 100% efficient. Typical small UPS units run at 85-95% efficiency in "online" mode. That means if you plug in a device that draws 100 W, the UPS might draw 105-115 W from the wall just to feed it. That extra 5-15% is pure heat loss, and you’re paying for it.

So the average PC runs 3-500W when in use, 10% loss for 15 hours a day, 30 days a month is 18Kw of electricity "wasted". My average bill is ~400Kw a month. So I add 5% to my power bill to ensure that my ~4-5k$ pc and peripherals are safe from random voltage spikes and in the case of a power outage I can save what I'm working on.
At this point I expect you to tell me you rush in and out of the shower to save on your hot water bill...

Depends on the unit.
More expensive ones tend to be ac > dc > ac because there is no failover time. The power is always coming from the battery dc > ac circuit so when the main drops it is completely unaffected.
Cheaper models will failover, and if the load is a little high, or the failover time is a little long, or the device is very sensitive (cheaper power supplies) then it can still cause the device to restart/crash.

Tell me more about charging in intervals.
As a ups, it's entire task is to be there when the power has an unplanned failure.
Due to the nature of unplanned failures, anything less than 100% charge all the time is unacceptable I think. Unless you have regular scheduled time where the protected equipment is off, like at night, then you can do it then I guess

I disagree.
Critical system should have a generator with at least a month's worth of fuel.
The UPS only needs to power the system for a few seconds until the generators kick in.

I use a UPS with my NAS to allow it to shut down gracefully, it only needs to power my NAS for 5 minutes.

Relying on batteries to keep a system up during an outage is dumb.
But even then a healthy battery at 90% charge is better than a "fully charged" degraded battery that can only store half its original charge.
You're likely also going to forget to replace your UPS in time so when the battery dies after 2 years of continuous charging you're completely unprotected.

Only old people die from heat.
It's often what pushes them over the edge when they're about to die within months anyways.

And air conditioners at elderly homes do more harm than good.
They make the air dry which causes a lot of airways infections.
That's why we don't use them in mild climates, not because we can't afford them.
