Is there a distro that lets me uninstall any of the default GNOME programs? Arch didn't let me and it seems none of the other major distros do either. A lot of their shit is bundled together so you can't remove one thing. I have no fucking need for a camera program on a desktop.

I remember cheese being a dependency of the default gnome desktop for whatever reason.
On debian, if you choose no/another DE during the installation, and then install "gnome-core", you will get a gnome desktop without cheese.

GNOME is not like macOS
macOS (current) looks like dogshit.
GNOME doesn't have half the functionality. You just have to look at the features on Finder and Nautilus to see how much different they are. You can't do fucking dick on nautilus. Finder on the other hand, has all sorts of stuff and never had to remove things like desktop icons to work. On the other hand, Finder also has weird useless shit, like the option to disable progress bars. Who the fuck would wanna do that

I'll keep that in mind, thanks. Next time I do a test Linux install I'll just skip the option to install a DE and do it like that. I just hate having useless shit installed that I'll never use.

There's no way. Just buy a mac and leave windows only for what's necessary.

>GNOME with its ecosystem is like 90% there

Maybe however the issue isn't "how good" Linux is or is not, the issue is that KDE is the only serious "user interface" distro

Fedora nerds take pride that their parents can't use the command line, it gives them some kind of power rush

You either start scratch with Arch or you accept a distro's bloatware

I did Arch, but used archinstall for the installation where you pick your DE. When I picked GNOME it installed a bunch of useless shit like cheese/camera and wasn't able to remove it. It's not an Arch package and uninstalling with the GNOME software app does nothing.

Never understood the bar at the top and program launcher at the bottom. Just do what Windows does and stick it all together at the bottom. Stop wasting screen real estate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menu_bar#Ease-of-use
>Bruce Tognazzini, former employee of Apple Inc. and Human–computer interaction professional, claims[6] that the Mac OS's menu bars can be accessed up to five times faster due to Fitts's law: because the menu bar lies on a screen edge, it effectively has an infinite height — Mac users can just "throw" their mouse pointers toward the top of the screen with the assurance that it will never overshoot the menu bar and disappear.

Windows embeds menu bars in application windows, not the taskbar. A global menu additionally enables applications to have a menu bar without having any windows open. Both the menu bar and the dock can be set to auto-hide, and their visibily toggled with keyboard shortcuts.

I think the biggest obstacle to Linux becoming good is the Linux userbase that wants it to stay unneccessarily complex so they can feel smart for using it

You can remove the camera app on arch it’s just under the package name ’snapshot’ in extras.
Gnome is inconsistent because their naming is like “gnome-calculator” other times it’s all fancy like “nautilus” or “epiphany”.
You got to look up what the names are to delete them.

They need to stop changing names and be consistent. If it's named something on the GNOME website, then all distros should follow that name for the packages.
