Soulseek is dying
https://github.com/fiso64/slsk-batchdl/issues/128#issuecomment-3170418940

Soulseek has begun banning terms from searches.
With the zoomer influx from tiktok, how much time does it have left? And where do we go when it goes down?
I really don't want to resort to private tracker faggotry.

its been doing this for over a decade, you just need to learn how to navigate around the banned terms.

for example, search for "Beatles" shows no results, but search for an album title and you'll get a million results.

OHHHHH this is what's been happening
Because on /mu/ a LOT of people have been complaining they can't find things on there when they search for them
It's happened to me too, you have to type the name and year and hope they turn up
writing certain artist names will return nothing
Sometimes a VPN gets around it I think
but yeah this is 100% happening
At least I know we've not all been going mad on there now
maybe it's been going on longer but the expansion this year has been massive
Anonymous No.106202001 >>106202035
People are still finding Clipse albums and downloading them from me. Soulseek has banned terms like "Beatles" for years. It's easy to work around it. Use your imagination. By the way if you're not on a private tracker soulseek is shit. A bunch of us RED/OPS users share our entire collections on there. You can search for specific folder names from private trackers on soulseek to avoid wasting your ratio. Then there's also no need to waste your time verifying that the files you got from soulseek aren't youtube2flac garbage. If it cross seeds it's legit. It's not dying you're just using it all wrong. Low skilled pirates are embarrassing.

Soulseek is more convenient and doesn't require you to go through a humiliation ritual to download music. Do you really think that you fags have more people sharing rare music? Don't make me laugh.

The only way private trackers could surpass soulseek is if it were to go down.

If your connection was AOL it's not actually better. I am old enough to remember. 56k was 56k (or slower) so downloading mp3s from a guy with shit upload on a cable modem would saturate the connection just the same as a T3 or some shit would. I am right now reminiscing about downloading a CD single from a XDCC bot on my grandma's AOL connection. The bot had a minimum speed and would cut you off if you went below it so I kept resuming over and over until it completed.

However, I am not a wintoddler or mactoddler, so I cannot just add EAC or XLD log to my upload, and why would something retarded like that even matter? Anyway, my point is that some wintoddler could potentially trump my uploads if logless uploads were even allowed on RED or OPS, so why the fuck would I even want to share my relatively obscure music files there when they want me to use proprietary bullshit?

Soulseek excels at it's niche because it's just single threaded person to person transfers. That works for people who want to download albums not single tracks, even though the few people out there who still want to use p2p the old fashioned normie way and just download songs not albums are now clinging to soulseek. There's the obvious, the elephant in the room, streaming. But changes in music consumption patterns didn't just apply to normalfags using streaming. Piracy has shifted too. People want whole albums in FLAC. They don't want to piece them together track by track ripped from different sources with varying volume levels/different mastering making transitions between tracks sound jarring. It's about keeping a library of quality music these days. Not downloading a few songs to burn a mix CD.

I don't have admin access to the router I use, so can't open ports to share share anything using my Win machine, but if I install Nicotine with Linux, I don't suppose there's a way to share without fucking around with the router?

Long shot but thought I'd ask anyway.

I don't see why decentralized p2p should be incompatible with downloading full albums. Isn't that just a matter of UI?

Well it technically isn't. There's nothing stopping you from sharing albums over BitTorrent DHT which is exactly that and is well suited to the application. It's kinda janky looking for albums on btdig or whatever though compared to downloading directly from someone on soulseek who is online right now and has no queue. Waiting for albums to download isn't a big deal these days either so single threaded connections are fine. When I download from private torrent trackers it takes seconds for me to get an album. On Soulseek it's 5 minutes on average. That's not terrible.

I don't have open ports and still get the occasional upload. Peers with open ports will be able to download from you.

The thing that fucks you with not having open ports is that results from users who also don't have them will be hidden in searches. I can't do anything about it because my ISP is CGNAT so running soulseek on my seedbox is the way to go.

The results from users who have open ports are enough. The ones with closed ports typically have lower quality and fewer shares anyways.

Well I personally was sharing lots of high quality material and hunting for rare stuff. If slskd existed a long time ago I probably could have obtained more.
