I guess the idea is Google/Microsoft/Apple selling authentication services to smaller sites and acting like a middle-man. Hell, most people already have an account on some of those services, oftentimes with a phone number already associated, so they just need you to give an state ID.

Yeah, but this new ruling is based entirely on the analogue of a porn shop. The Supreme Court basically said "you need id to go to a real porno theater so same for internet". It doesn't really leave the door open for UK style laws regulating access more broadly. I think the US really would limit it to porn sites
