/tpg/ - Thinkpad general
Previous thread: >>106162184

Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series (especially X230, T440p and T480, those are the best pads for bucks) if you want the Real Business Experience™
Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook)

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards, tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium roll cage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>Excellent Linux & *BSD support
>Trackpoint (why the fuck wasn't this in the general before? that's the only reason to get a thinkpad in 2025 honestly)

What thinkpad would be a safe bet? I just want something I can mess around with an put linux on. Ideally something very customizable if I ever might find use for that. I know the newr models of "thinkpad" are more and more like the computers the old ones set themselves apart from.

Sorry to double, didn't notice there are two threads.
I'm buying my first laptop ever and I need some explanation. What exactly is so good about them thinkpads? like I'm standing before choice of lenovo's T14 gen5 and Acer Nitro V16 budget """gayming""" that has about same everything but 2'' more and actual gpu to sport twice as big ssd and a bunch of stuff, and the only exception is thunderbolt I guess. Yet T14 is 50% mroe expensive.
What exactly is the magic here? Explain this to me like I'm four years old.

I've never held these things in my hands, I am not trying to deningrate them or anything, I'm just going by the specs and they got me confused. I don't even game much these days and when I do it's certainly nothing I need amazing gpu for so.
How upgradable and expandable are we talking?

Very (depending of the model) thinkpads like the t480 has upgradable WiFi/BT, ram, ssd, keyboard (t25 mod), battery, and has a extra sata drive slot.

Mostly safe bets by budget
<$50: T420(s)
<$100: T440p, X270, T470, T460p
<$200: T470p, T480(s), T495
<$300: T14G1a

None of these are fully foolproof, each model has at least one spec that you can get wrong such as ugly screen, previous-gen CPU, undersized battery.

Thanks.
Also, any advice on not messing this up, be it with their parts or whatever have you, or just anything to be an educated thinkpad user? I've made a few posts about it in these threads but I got a T450 that was kind of a scam and doesn't work, and a T420 that wouldn't turn on which I returned to it's seller (both the sellers were a bit fishy and I should have used soemthing like ebay), so I've had my brush ins with Thinkpad problems. I know you kinda just have to run into walls and learn, to some degree, but I really went into it like a complete and total pleb.

Nothing super major really, it’s that they’re really economical to get used because of the business lease cycle.
A big company buys every one of their locations 20-30 laptops at a bulk discount, uses them for 3-5 years, and turns them all back in.
First party resale takes place, but anything that isn’t flawless goes off to recyclers. The recyclers clean the data off the machines and resell them.
But, there’s way more laptops than there are buyers so they dump them at stupidly low prices that are still above their scrap value they paid for them.
You end up being able to laptops a few years old that you can get specced high enough to btfo modern entry level for even less money than modern entry level. A T420 at its peak volume sales point was cheaper than an HP stream (or any cheap consumer laptop) was new at the same time and completely shit stomped it in performance and features.

Combine this with these being business hardware, they’re built well, they’re made of nice materials, they have good features and are made to survive heavy use.

This pertains to all model lines too. Compare a Thinkpad P50 to an equivalent skylake + Maxwell era gaming laptop. A P50 will have a 6700HQ or equivalent Xeon, and an M1000/2000m, which are like GTX 960/970m’s
Compared to any similar spec gaming laptop there’s no contest at all. For less money you get the same or better performance but also get
>a better display
>a better built chassis by far
>substantially better heatsinks, cooler and quieter by a LOT
>better I/o options
>four ram slots
>multiple drive slots for up to 3 ssds at once
Even to this day a P50 is cheaper than a gaming laptop of the same time, performs better, is quieter, has better features and looks like a normal laptop you can bring places without being embarrassed.
And that’s just one example, this applies to most thinkpad generations and product lines.

Though it’s not always thinkpads, this applies to any popular business laptops.

Anyone here experienced in restoring old Thinkpads? I got a 380XD in alright condition, it boots and works fine but it's slow as fuck so I'd like to do a clean install. Apparently these have heatsinks and fans so judging by the last date timestamps on it it's been a good 2 decades without a cleaning.

i have exactly one of those, a 380XD

These dont get too brittle but you gotta be really careful with the plastics, they dont hold up to any abuse anymore, they will crack if youre too rough with them
you can drop in a sata adapter but its recommended to use something like an off the shelf IDE to msata adapter instead and use old msata ssds, youre going to have to format it to a smaller capacity anyway and the premade IDE to msata adapters are much more reliable than IDE to sata standalone ones are
compact flash cards over ide are also a good option because you can cram 2 of them in there as master and slave directly over IDE without any fuss

i wouldnt even bother repasting it, it uses the pink shit which is still probably good enough, and its a nightmare to clean when its nearly 30 years old, the pmmx in there isnt that toasty anyway

honestly just blow it out, create a new windows user and delete the old user, youre good as new
if you want it to run a bit faster the ide to some form of ssd adapter will be better but youre still gonna top out at the bus speed anyway which isnt that fast
mine chugs running photoshop 5.0 to edit 1024x768 images, its never going to be fast, enjoy the slow

Been wondering, the X1 Carbon and TXXs thinkpads are hailed as the "best" among the best when it comes to durability and quality among the Thinkpad lines but why are they less repairable?
I mean, In a sense that both of these lines have their keyboards requiring you to remove the entire motherboard so that it could be replaced. And soldered RAMs.
Quite sure that the T14 and X13 have the same chassis, and that means equal durability too, no?

Avoid 1366x768 screen at all costs (terrible contrast) and Privacy Guard if you care about battery. The other screens are fine imo. Sweet spot for CPU is Ryzen 5, though R3 and R7 and the 6-core i7s (10710U and 10810U) aren't bad either. 4-core Intels aren't worth the premium over T480(s)/T490.

you can probably use any panels that fits and whose resolution is supported by the laptop. you'll probably have to dig around for some info though as I don't know much about the T420, but you'll likely find a wide range of options, just pick one with the specs you prefer and swap the original panel with it. I haven't, but you should understand the mechanism at play before you do it. You're removing material from the rubberized outer coating to make it look more uniform, not fully "restoring" it per se, so if you have really deep scratches it's only going to make those worse. For shallow scuffs and scratches you should be able to buff them out. I've used a soft damp cloth for very light scuffs in the past but I usually don't bother with it.

My Thinkpad T430 seems surprisingly slow. I am running TDE on Fedora (I switched from KDE because I figured TDE would make it less slow, and it did, but not enough). And I can't quite figure out what the problem is. I thought it was the CPU, but I am beginning to suspect it has something to do with the RAM. The refurbisher mentioned that it was already 16gb, so I thought I wouldn't need to upgrade it, but there was some misinformation on the Amazon page and I even had to replace the battery because it was the wrong model, and checking fastfetch tells me that it's running at 15.40 gigs at most.
Any way I can diagnose my problem beforehand using software? Or should I go ahead and open it up first to diagnose the issue? Either way, I am still upgrading the CPU, just wondering if I have to do the same for the RAM.
Also yeah, I am inexperienced as shit, it's both my first time using Linux, and using a Thinkpad and tinkering around with hardware as a whole. I am taking this as a learning experience though.
Anonymous No.106270461 [Report] >>106270484

To be specific, it's 15.43gb and only 13% is used up, which is why part of me thinks maybe it's not the problem.

it reporting a slightly lower amount of total RAM isn't a problem normally. my T480 reports 62.5GB when I have 64, and it doesn't have any issues

I did both a fair amount of distro hopping and DE hopping beforehand, so I doubt that's the case. Q4OS did work the fastest, but the startup was still fairly slow no matter what (which is actually the biggest problem for me).
So the only possibility is, either the RAM's problem it's something else (maybe it's faulty or it's some other type that's not as good? I am not too familiar with what makes RAM work/good honestly).
Or it really is the CPU first and foremost like I initially suspected.
Or the SSD just isn't good enough (it's roughly 400gb and I already have taken up roughly 200gb (mostly games and software), so that might be part of the problem).
Or something else entirely
Either way, upgrading the SSD and CPU is definitely a must, but I really am curious if I can figure out if the RAM has anything to do with it first and foremost, or if I am just flat-out missing something else that's crucial from the software-side (drivers maybe?).
If all else fails, I'll go distro-hopping again just in case, but I'll leave that as a last resort because I kinda like my current setup and don't want to reinstall everything again.
