>There has been private conversations with Kent. I will note that it was *Kent* who started this most recent round of e-mails[1]. In his e-mail, He slammed the Linux Kernel's "engineering standards", and btrfs in particular. I won't quote any of it here, because it really is quite toxic, but please note that it was Kent who started the discussion about btrfs. This kind of attack is Just Not Helpful, and this kind of behavior is, unfortunately, quite common coming from Kent.
So Kent sperged out again it seems going by what Tso said.

so basically:
- some autist working on a filesystem has a tendency to go on endless rants about how shit everything is in the kernel
- maintainers get annoyed, refuse to work with him
- eventually it gets to the point where nobody is willing to work with this guy
- linus is flooded with complaints about him
- linus is now seriously considering removing his code from the kernel

the bureaucracy of linux just isn't at all suited to adding new features. it's fine politically if hardware drivers for anything slightly outside the mainstream gets stuck in PR limbo never making it for years until the hardware dies in obscurity and everyone sticks to the same amd/intel monopoly, but not for filesystems where its usage is more general.
linus is way too used to corporate wagies at his beck and call that he's forgot all about the people who do the dirty work for the love of it. he's sidelined maintainers for the longest time just to do LTS for a redhat and google that never even cared for it, and is now actively fucking them over with rust too. linus doesn't care as long as his linux foundation keeps making bank (none of it ever going to the ones who do it for free)

it's something you only feel when you're actually involved in the kernel devving process and not getting your news from corporate mouthpieces whose only purpose is to suck linus's cock and make a big deal out of niche bullshit features worthless for every other linux user so they get merged.

the entire reason for bcachefs removal:

kents own replies in the entire mail thread show a strong need to defend his technical work and reputation, even when others are clearly trying to shift the discussion toward behavior and collaboration.
instead of acknowledging the interpersonal concerns he repeatedly redirects to:

>critiquing others projects (btrfs is his anal)
>justifying his own actions
>framing it as a broader culture problem rather than a personal one
>attaching conditions to any offer to change

multiple respected maintainers literally spelled out that the problem isnt the code, its him. they tried explaining it over and over, and he either ignored it or turned it back into why everyone else is wrong. even when ppl said β€œno fs is worth destroying the collaborative environment,” he only agreed to tone it down if linus stopped touching his code.

instead of saying β€œok i hear you, i’ll work on it,” he went back to btrfs-bashing, bringing up old failures, and painting himself as the victim of some cowboy culture. he acts like every convo is a battle to win, not a problem to solve together.

he even argued for the whole jornal rewrite feature to be merged in a point release, even tho point releases are just for bugfixes. shows the same β€œi know better than the process” vibe that makes ppl not wanna work with him.

it’s like he’s allergic to humility β€” the idea of just admitting fault and moving on is foreign to him. every criticism is a launchpad for another lecture.

dr. anon, phd β€” clinical report
>patient: "kent"
>presenting issue: repeated interpersonal breakdowns in collaborative technical environments

observations:
>kent exhibits a pronounced inability to acknowledge peer feedback without redirecting the conversation toward defending his technical competence.
>when confronted with interpersonal concerns, he demonstrates a reflexive counter-attack pattern, often broadening the scope to critique unrelated projects (notably btrfs) and invoking systemic "culture" problems to deflect personal accountability.

behavioral traits noted:
>ego fortification reflex: immediate, automatic defense of self-image upon receiving critique
>conditional concessionism: offers to change behavior only if others meet his terms
>comparative deflection: shifts focus from own flaws to others’ historical failures
>procedural exceptionalism: belief that established processes should be altered to accommodate personal preferences (e.g., point-release feature merges)
>humility avoidance syndrome: marked discomfort with unqualified admissions of fault

hypothetical fictional diagnosis:
>chronic collaborative friction disorder (ccfd) β€” characterized by persistent difficulty engaging in mutual problem-solving due to over-prioritization of perceived self-competence and status preservation in group settings.

prognosis:
>good technical outcomes possible if patient develops tolerance for perceived "losses" in discussion, practices unconditional acknowledgement of others concerns, and reduces frequency of legacy grievance recounting. without intervention, likely to experience continued contributor attrition and escalating community isolation.

treatment plan:
>exposure therapy to public "you’re wrong" statements without rebuttal
>daily humility reps (start with "youre right, my bad" once per day)
>group collaboration roleplay with simulated btrfs maintainers
>zero-contact policy with point release feature merges for 6 months

The treatment plan is spot on. The problem is he won't do it.

Once you've convinced yourself that you're in the right and have stirred up enough notoriety to create an "us vs. them" scenario with yourself as the leader of one side and with any number of people backing you up... you're too far gone and any kind of significant recovery is very unlikely, because it's precisely *this kind of drama* that gives you the dopamine burst unlike any other. Telling the old guard of kernel maintainers to bend to your will, while other people voice their support? Hell yeah, this feels better than filesystem programming.

Linux was meme toy trash before ReiserFS was added. Once ReiserFS was added; Linux took off on the datacentre. I was there, I saw it happen. It worked fine until the day he deleted it (real reason: because his feminist, trans, and industry friends (that he replaced the hackers that wrote linux since 1993 with) hate Reiser). He purposefully availed himself of Hacker labour since 1993 when he needed it. Now he's thrown out Reiser's life sacrifice (he gave everything for linux). This must be atoned by blood.
