Nothing. I abstain from tech when I want to be mindful and free of distraction. When I want to distract myself, I am using my smartphone.

Laptop for VNC over SSH
NAS for storage
VM host for VM's
Web Server for hosting Clinton's emails (2012r2 obviously)
Gaming PC for gayming
OPNSense router
MikroTik access points
I build enterprise stacks for a living and know that troubleshooting 1 is far easier than converged environments

Bro I freaking LOVE my Kindle.

be me used to lug around fat paperbacks like some Victorian orphan backpack always weighed 20lbs, spine permanently curved like a shrimp get Kindle on a whim entire library in my pocket now can read Dostoevsky while waiting for pizza rolls to cook can read trashy sci-fi at 3am without judging eyes can highlight quotes like “wow deep” and never look at them again battery lasts longer than my will to live screen looks like paper but without the tree murder no ads, no distractions, just pure book bliss feel like a wizard with infinite knowledge tfw Kindle is my best friend now

Seriously, if you don’t have one, you’re missing out. It’s like having a portal to every book ever written, minus the smell of old paper and existential dread of bookstore prices.

I told you, I don't need stuff to be mindful and be free of distraction.

When I want to distract myself, I use my phone.

I buy my devices for multiple purposes but usually have one main one in mind.
I bought my tablet to teach myself building GSI images and now I use it to read manga and watch content. My desktop is now just an AI machine and I use a dock with my laptop as my daily driver. I turned my old smarphone into a homeassistant wall terminal and eventually it will be a DIY ring doorbell.
>free of distraction
What is the distraction and what is it taking your attention from?
Anonymous No.106216615 >>106216623 >>106216725
>>106216568
The distraction comes from having an all in one type device like a smartphone, tablet, or laptop that is portable, capable, and aesthetically pleasing.
Because the device is portable, it will always be available when you want it without limitations. Because it is capable, you feel inclined to use it for just about anything it can. Because it is aesthetically pleasing, you feel drawn to holding it, continuing to use it, and obsessing over it.

Single purpose devices avoid this because they are mainly not as capable. You get one device to do one task when you need that one task. But you are not having a smartphone out to play music, then continue to use it for photos, then continuing to use it to answer messages or browse the web, etc

As for the “what” in terms of distraction, your mind is an incredible tool but is often occupied by digital bullshit. You can avoid this and be more intentional through the use of low tech. I take way more walks and feel more inclined to rest now

I still have a smartphone at home as I rely on a couple of things (whatsapp, revolut), but whenever I go outside I just carry this brick and an mp3 player sometimes. It's neat, and thank god I got it for very cheap.

It runs signal! Sometimes. But hey, my closest friends can text me for free on loud places, otherwise they just call me.

Full setup:
>punkt mp02
>dad's old kindle paperwhite
>garmin for when I go out running, casio for normal days
>pocket notebook
>cheapo bluetooth mp3 player
>samsung galaxy buds from ages ago, still work perfectly

Well yes it is, but if you really think you’re of stronger willpower than me all I can say is you’re at an earlier point in the path than I am at. This affects all people. There’s a reason it’s widely reported and scientifically studied.

That phone looks wonderful but the fact it’s 4G seems like an arbitrary limitation.

Yeah see you still haven't defined the distraction. You explained the function of how an AIO device can facilitate distraction but not what it actually is. "digital bullshit" isn't an answer.
>But you are not having a smartphone out to play music, then continue to use it for photos, then continuing to use it to answer messages or browse the web, etc
It's no different switching between your dedicated camera, mp3 player, messaging device and browser. Your "distraction" stays the same, you just consoomed more tech. If you're saying the small act of picking up a new device stops you from doing the action then I can't relate at all.
Do you really just flit from app to app without thinking? You're just brain empty clicking shit on your screen and mentally wake up minutes or hours later? Jesus.

I mean, I think there are some bigger fish to fry, like how it's fucking 300eur for a dumbphone running android (and you cannot sideload to it). I don't think you're gonna need 5G for such a phone, and 4G is definitely going to last decades, so this phone won't be outdated for basic things like calls and texts* anytime soon

*not counting pigeon/signal here, I don't know how long Punkt are going to actively support this phone with updates and all, so it's def not gonna last a lot.

But this isn't how mindfulness works. You practice mindfulness, by abstaining from media bullshit. You are just replacing one distraction with another.

This is how you practice actual mindfulness: You are sitting on the toilet with NO DISTRACTIONS. No phones, no e readers, no mp3 players, no books. You just sit there and concentrate on your own thoughts and the shitting process. This is mindfulness.

> If you're saying the small act of picking up a new device stops you from doing the action then I can't relate at all.
I’m surprised you don’t relate. I’ve often found when I had a smartphone I took way more pictures for instance. Pictures I barely if ever revisited.
Now that picture taking is an intentional act with a specific device I find photos are much more purposeful and meaningful.

> You just sit there and concentrate on your own thoughts and the shitting process. This is mindfulness.
I don’t disagree, what I’m saying is that you’re much more inclined to do something like that when you’re not consistently connected to the Internet, with a device that consistently pings you and always gives you new information

Most of the pictures I take are temporary to put things back the way they were before. Like cable routing or fuse placement in my car. Or a serial number to lookup later.
I have never felt the urge to take a photo of something unless I feel like I need to reference the information later. What are you looking at that makes you think you should take a photo of it?

I had a Punkt for 3 years and now I got myself a Mudita Kompakt. The battery life is much better, I charge the phone every 7-10 days. I can sideload stuff if I want and it's overall a better experience for around the same price. I liked my Punkt, but Mudita is just so muchn better. Too bad Punkt's new smartphone is tied to predatory payment plans.
Anonymous No.106222064
>>106221809
yeah, I'll agree with you on that. Right now I'm happy with the Punkt and a smartphone separately, but I know damn well that I'll end up switching to something else in the future. The new punkt smartphone is entirely out of the question.

I'm honestly thinking of selling my current smartphone as it still has a good value on the market and going back to my previous one to use as a secondary phone.

The kompakt tempts me a lot, but I don't know if I'll pull the trigger, esp since I now have the punkt and all that. I'll give this current lifestyle a try and then think what to do in the future
