If you have spare CPU capacity, and you love having non-cucked things like actually private internet money keep existing, consider mining Monero. Someone is trying to 51% attack it. They're at like 20% right now but allegedly at some point they briefly hit 40%. A more sustainable solution is being developed, but in the interim, it just needs hash rate.

Bitcoin is already 51 percented by ASIC companies. Everyone just ignores it because no one uses it for anything but gains.
Anonymous No.106235688 [Report] >>106235919
>>106234074
That's not the definition of 51% at all. ASIC companies don't control the miners after selling them. They don't control the block templates produced by pools/miners.
Anonymous No.106235919 [Report] >>106236037

China and the United States could theoretically 51% Bitcoin. China more easily since they're the manufacturing power house. I did the calculation it only costs around 20 billion dollars in ASICs to match the current hashrate of the Bitcoin network. Of course there's also costs but probably under 100 billion all in. Also that's with the consumer prices, I imagine China for instance could procure the ASICs more cheaply.

I don't know if it's cope but the Monero fans are saying it's a coordinated attack and everyone jumped in to take down Monero when they smelled blood in the water. And maybe there's some credibility to that seeing as Monero has been delisted from many exchanges.
Anonymous No.106236237 [Report] >>106239169

Also I crunched the numbers for Monero and it's something like 50 million dollars in 5950x rigs to match the current network hash rate.

Actually it's more like $200 million and $5000/hour in electricity at $0.1/kwh
>Monero network hashrate: ~5GH (5 x 10^9)
>5950x hashrate: 20KH (20 x 10^3)
>Needed 5950x rigs: (10GH / 20KH/rig) = 250,000 rigs
>$200 million for the rigs at $800/rig
>50,000 kwh/h at 200W per rig, $5000/hour at $0.1/kwh
If you had a lot of money and could rent enough compute you wouldn't even need the rigs. This isn't counting the other infrastructure involved like cooling.

No, right now a single autist is claiming to have 51%'d monero which he simply wasn't even close to achieving. Historical hashrates are public record you nigger, you can just verify it for yourself as can anyone else assuming the ability to read and comprehend simple sentences which granted is a huge assumption on this board.

Crypto lost the race. You need to have a usable product that's got some value to it. You won't sell anything when its only value (and not even -added- value) is some abstract concept of privacy and decentralization most people don't care about.

There are real financial products and derivatives that have been created in the ETH/SOL/smart contract ecosystems, so your argument that all crypto is useless because it doesn't have a usable product is self-evidently false.

You could mention that one could run the xmr miner in a resource limited way.
Just using x (a part of the full capacity) instead of the full amount
of the resources.
That way a lot of people could run it without just burning chips.
It is not useful from a maximum intensity mining perspective but
it could be useful for your securing the network approach.

it idles at ~300W btw.
also, give me a tl;dr for setting up a miner, afaik pool mining had some changes and i can't be assed to figure out how i have to change my configs now or patch xmrig to get rid of auto donations.

it is relatively simple. you download the miner, search for a pool add the information into the config file and then start the miner. but don't do it for monero if you don't want to, do it for a currency you want to mine! there are lists where you could compare PoW currencies.
