for normal usage (browsing, programming, gaming, consume media, etc.) its fine, but for degenerated pederasts like >>106232597 who run local models, media "production", or any other coomer shit that amounts to nothing but waste of electricity, it might not be enough.

I browse like a granny, and leave thousands of tabs open. On a reboot and having just opened firefox without many tabs loaded, just the ones from last session, I'm already at 13gb. I also don't close firefox when I play games, and sometimes watch youtube while doing it. My memory usage goes up to 45gb at that point.

16gb is definitely not enough these days. 32gb should be the minimum.

stop being a retard and know the limit of your hardware. you implied everyone has to commute 300 miles daily therefore we need mandatory 50 gallons tank for every car. maybe in a few decades, but not now, and definitely not for any sane person.

I have 8GB and it's enough for me. This laptop originally had only 4 GB and it was fine for a while.
I added another card because I was worried about Krita not having enough memory for layers while drawing and because I want to play some older games.

I used to have a desktop and a server but now my main rig is just a server. my desktop is technically a VM with everything in passthrough. so yes, 64 gig ARC limit, some ram disks for media editing, a few other vm's in the background. 120-140 gets eaten quickly on a regular basis. I do find to alot of programs will take more ram if it's available.

>I still have 16
Same.
>I've had 16GB RAM since 2013
2016, but always dual channel.

I close all my tabs, once I don't need them. I have only two open terminals running, except for the browser now, on this system.

I have 14GB of free memory still available.
The games I regularly play might rarely take up to 12GB of RAM (6-7GB usually maximum).

There are very few applications that actually need more than 16GB of data for a program to work on IN VOLATILE MEMORY, jfc, usually, it's because the user *wants* to use that much memory, if only out of convenience.

I'd probably upgrade to 32GB if I buy a new system, but if I'm going to save money, then I'd rather skip on that, tbf.
Also switching to Linux and not Windows, headless Debian 12 uses <250MB RAM after a fresh boot, LMDE on a 15-yo netbock uses <900MB RAM.

>BUY MORE STUFF
Yeah, yeah.

Highest I've went at home so far was 512GB. DDR4 ECC 64MB DIMMs aren't too expensive used, but the price jumps dramatically for 128GB DIMMs. 512GB in DDR5 would be too expensive.

>There are very few applications
Okay, RAMdisks might be nice. But in the age of M.2 NVME SSDs and CPUs with massive L3 (or even L4), does it *really* make a difference?

AI applications and video editing is pretty much the only thing I can think of. Then there are science and engineering workstations, where you have to work with large data-sets.

>My game's loading time from 10s on SSD is now 1.5s on RAMdisk

Maybe aid in running some local models. There are a few 256GB kits that are on my boards QVL, but I'm waiting on the lower latency DDR5-6000 kit from G.Skill that they announced a couple of months ago to be available before upgrading.

idk what people in this thread are doing, but in linux you have to run a ton of shit to run out of 16gb. like a dozen youtube apps, a dozen electron apps, and even more native desktop apps on top of that, a hundred tabs, etc.

right now i have brave with 2 dozen tabs, spotify, vscode, perplexity, obsidian, a few terminals, and 2 docker containers, and i'm only sitting at 10gb used.

128? I can't clock it past 5000 but even the mobos and the fricken intel memory controllers are silicon lottery these days.

Look at amazon. Gen 13 and Gen 14 reviews/stars on customer satisfaction on the i9's vs i7's.
