>dude this is better than Linux, it's like Unix + polished UI that just works
>cant run headless and boot into CLI since Mavericks (10 years ago)
what the fuck is the point of a "Unix like" system then?

Mac OS is Unix as much as Windows 11 is OS/2

Mac OS is certified Unix actually. The Single Unix Specification doesn't demand headless operation.

basically what happened is apple paid the opengroup for a license to use unix trademarks. that's it. apple believed it would attract people to use the operating system but it did nothing of the sort and they still have the worst marketshare out of all computing brands.

>>106232340
> certified
it's meaningless since anyone can buy a license to use the brand name.

even you losers of this website could get unix certification for all kinds of trash:

The OS also has to pass their compliance suite.

why does the zsh 'ls ~/' on macos take 70ms while it's 4ms on arch loonix?

is it some corporate security shitware on my work computer or is the macos really that slow?

because macOS has many files in the home directory and troonix has nothing??

It's THE brainlet OS. Even Windows gives you more power to do whatever you want. 90% of IT people couldn't work with it if things like VMs or brew were not available.

>>106232340
>>106232622
Didn't Apple not renew the license?
Anyways, it says a lot that MacOS is the single Unix certified OS that is still in use and yet it's only used in enterprise by designers and people using Windows and/or Linux as containers and VMs inside it and pretty much all of it's user base tools are BSD.

it's interesting that it takes at least 1s if not more to launch a shell instance e.g. in tmux (and i have worked around the login shell invocation, disabled Terminal.app shell sessions and such)

tap the shortcut and wait

everything is just slower, like every disk access and process invocation gets intercepted

and by slower i mean 10-50 times slower

4-15 ms vs 50-250 ms for interactive shell commands

MacOS sends ALL your activity to Apple, including the hashes of apps you are running. This is why if your internet is really shitty, apps take longer to start. This is not a joke.

you are right, i actually have 42 dirs and text files in ~/ on macos laptop and on the linux computer i am on. mostly the same files too.

can you explain what macOS does to make listing this directory more than 50 times slower?

sorry 'only' - 17 times slower - 4ms vs 70ms

you don't. there are over 1000 files and directories in ~/Library.

ok only 440k files on loonix, but one of the node_modules dirs is like 2 million files on macos laptop according to ncdu (even know it may just be redundant harlinks)

would that make the ssd and every disk access ever so much slower?
Anonymous No.106234136 >>106234787
chat, does ssd get slower by more than an order of magnitude if there are many small files on it?

It's just more stable, man. If you remember the Mac OS 9 days, you'd know how much more stability Mac OS X offered at launch due to its UNIX-based kernel. Mac OS 10.2 was noticeably when the transition was complete. All of a sudden Mac OS was rock fucking solid and without random crashes. The transition to UNIX was a great move. Ironically that's when I stopped using Macs and transitioned to Linux, because Linux was free as in beer, and I needed something to run on old hardware.

Linux can be certified UNIX™. Two distros have done this before, K-UX and EulerOS - both aimed at the mainframe market in China. But it's just not worth it because old Unix is mostly irrelevant, Linux *is* the standard now.
