It won't become worse because its becoming more popular, it will be crippled to that it can't get more popular. If you look at desktop alone windows still dominates but ultimately android is already on the way to being effectively closed sourced, its filled with spyware but its easier for the new generation to use and they're used to it. windows will become 'niche' the same way that macos is, android will dominate. Linux will be there for their uses only. Chances are this has already been planned out by all involved. Just like everything else.

The only game I can think of that didn't "just run" was Catherine, which isn't because it didn't run, it was because you have to set the resolution before running the game, otherwise it will default to 1x1 resolution. The game still runs and functions, it just has a weird quirk where you have to know settings. Windows has this problem with old games, too, just in different ways like running a game in administrator mode or having to install GWFL dependencies manually.

And yes, just like most gamers, I do not give a shit about EAC bullshit where the game refuses to run in Linux. Where the issue is that the game is refusing to function. Not that the game can't function.

It depends on what you mean by mainstream. Desktop computers aren't even mainstream anymore. Mainstream with home users like gamers? Possibly. Mainstream for serious work? With more adoption of FOSS software like Germany switching from MS Office for FOSS alternatives, there is potential there too. Linux is already mainstream for servers, so it could have potential in other areas. But no business would want to use software that they can't get help and support for in a simple and efficient way, that is why they would need more than community FOSS projects to rely on their work. For FOSS to get somewhere in business, they would need to offer that support. With gaming, the gap between games and Linux is only getting smaller, and with the launch of the Steam deck, it hasn't been more accessible than it has now.

But success in the office is only one area of professional work. One area that Linux continues to struggle in is in creative production and multimedia, like graphics, audio and video. If this avenue was on par with the rest of the other things, there would be more reason to choose Linux over Windows.
