Regarding that, because there are other websites I'm related to that are also in a "comply or shut out entire countries of users" situation, what morally would be the best path forward for them? Of course we all want to stand on principle and say "dont comply with those governments, dont bend to terrorism" but if the mission is to indiscriminately allow anyone and everyone access to learn and use as resources, to deny traffic is failing that mission. Is the mission equally compromised by agegating instead of geogating?
Also I'm not 100% privy to the nuts and bolts of the legislation, I'm noticing nobody is entertaining the idea of only asking for IDs from compromised countries and not ones that still have the freedom. The UK is begining to make heavy stances against VPNs (despite promoting them for Russia years ago, lol) so if they ban VPNs and therefor have little reason to believe their age checks can't be circumvented any longer, why not distinguish traffic based on nation and treat them accordingly? Only answer I've seen is they are lazy or greedy and pretending to be lazy.

you can self-host an email server. $10 a year for the domain name and if you dont want to host the server you can rent a vps for like $5 a month
custom email + personal website for whatever purpose + you can be sure no one is looking at your emails (unless you go with the vps)
but i doubt proton would fall anyway, they have a history of complying with the feds

also i would recommend de-googling and running things locally right now, you dont lose much anyway
