The first computer to beat a chess grandmaster was in 1988. LLMs cannot even last more than 30 moves against Magnus Carlsen in 2025. Starts forgetting the basic rules of how pieces move and keeps making illegal moves and still loses. How does this even happen that modern AI is worse at chess than a 1988 computer?

fuzzy logic, while being a blessing, it is also a curse. You can't just use it for everything. You need to modulate it. Compartmentalize it, and learn it to use subsystems, which can then do to precise work. Otherwise, it is doomed to fail.

LLMs have a context long enough to fit an entire chess match, but they're designed to generalize so they shouldn't be especially overfit to recognize and operate on chess notation.
moreover LLMs do increasingly poorly at abstract reasoning as the context gets longer and more complex.
