i use a pi zero 2 w tucked away in the corner of my apartment with a wide-angle arducam/sony 16mp camera module attached. have a little python server that captures images on a timer and switches to video if there's movement. at night i can set the exposure time up super high to get a clear picture, and i know it can't "phone home" like a cheap aliexpress camera setup

Synology if you're willing to pay for it.
Or host your own dvr setup if you have a server at home.

>>106256486
this seems pretty cool desu. But if you have the knowhow to setup something yourself, couldn't you just block whichever cheap chinese camera you have from phoning home? The dvr server recording the footage is local anyway so just set up a static IP for the camera and block it from the router.

>Reolink if you're a poorfag, Hikvision or Dahua if you can spend a bit more
>Have a little server running Frigate, optionally paired with home assistant for remote monitoring
>Have a decent router so you can firewall the cameras off from accessing the internet directly

It's as shrimple as that. If you have some old hardware laying around you can hack together a server for a pretty low cost. My router didn't have the firewall settings I needed, and I couldn't flash it with custom firmware, so I'm using it just as an access point, with a raspberry pi running openwrt as a router.

Frigate, ZoneMinder, MotionEye, anything that you run yourself with cheap cameras in a separate VLAN that doesn't allow access to the internet (every chinkshit aliexpress camera below 70 bucks hosts IoT malware like mirai.)
Otherwise just take the moneypill and spend a bunch on synology or unifi. Hikvision has nice colorview, but watch out that you don't buy come chink-lang only grey import unless you can reflash it to USA or european firmware

CCTV systems have really evolved and it's hard to compete against commercial stuff with diy solutions.

The cameras themselves run on ASICs that do advanced processing like 2D/3D noise reduction, WDR, h265 encoding and local inference. All for $50. Any diy camera is going to be lacking in comparison.

Most of the foss solutions like frigate, scrypted, shinobi hide the advanced stuff behind paid subscriptions.

Rolling you own solutions for things like apps, remote access, inference, push notifications is pretty involved. But if you already have a home server running home assistant or some other ecosystem I'd start there.

The only thing frigate locks behind paid subscriptions are the more advanced AI models for object detection, which you don't really need. For 99% of users the free version is more than enough.

IMO their documentation could be a bit better, particularly when it comes to how to configure frigate to actually talk to your cameras, but chatgpt actually does a pretty good job at writing the config files for you and debugging what's wrong.

Nobody's building their own cameras, but security cameras have much more advanced features compared to some webcam you pulled from the back of your desk drawer, or even bought new from Amazon. That being said, some of those features, like AI object/person detection, might not function if you use a 3rd party NVR software instead of their native app, since the software will have its own version of that. What will matter is the quality of the sensor, video encoding, HDR, night vision, IR capabilities, etc. The worst-case test would be how clear of an image can you get of a license plate speeding off in the distance at night. Where a top of the line CCTV camera might let you make out a few digits of the plate, with a webcam you'd be lucky if you can even tell there's a car in the frame.

Wired, no internet beyond that it does not matter. If you want to acces sit remotely then air gap it and put a single camera pointing at the 8x8 or whatever. None of the chink boxes are safe to put ion the internets. Beyond that go play metal gear solid to figure out optimal location and make sure its at least 1080P with a dogital NV and you ahve IR illuminators. The best security is a dog around you as an alarm....they pick up on intruders hundreds of yards away while they are not even close. You can consider drones with flir and GPS routes automated as well as drone radar and retractable bollards and cattle trps but I don't think you are on that level. The nastiest booby trap? A 1KW laser but it will probably blind you or your dog before it gets an intruder. Get a shotgun, metal shutters with UPS back up and a steel and rubber cover for yoru exterior doors and a steel and rubber protector for your door frame..

Go monitored alarm with internet and SMS and be prepared, gangs have jammers now which is why wireless caremeras are useless. Everythig has to be cabled. >DIY NAS with Frigate on the same VLAN (through dedicated 1GbE NIC?)
>2.5 GbE NIC on NAS used for main VLAN, access to Frigate but not to cams
I wonder how much of a problem you have if someone manages to plug into the camera VLAN using one of the outdoor camera ethernet cables. Maybe it's a good idea to have separate VLANs for indoor and outdoor cameras so an attacker wouldn't be able to reach indoor cams from outside?
Also, how secure are VLANs? Is it theoretically possible to jump VLANs and if so, would a physically separate network be better? Would take more hardware though, instead of having a single big managed PoE switch for my entire home.

OP here. Wow this really took off! Thanks for all the helpful replies. For context: I live in tiny little scenic tourist town in Australia with less than 100 people. It's very first-world and yes we have guns because we're mostly farming/agricultural workers, but they're all registered and locked in safes like they should be. The problem is that there are a lot of empty holiday homes, and a young ~20yo meth-addict couple have "moved into" one of them. Without the absent owner complaining, the cops can't evict them. Without the police being able to catch them in a stolen (unregistered for years) car, they cant prove they were the ones they were chasing. People have caught them stumbling around trying to pinch shit in broad daylight but they scatter like cockroaches as soon as they say OI CUNT and pull out their phone. The burden of proof lies with the person who has something stolen or themselves assaulted, and them having actual video evidence. Yes any one of us could just snap and blow their heads off in minecraft, but even threatening someone with a gun will have yours taken away, firearms license suspended, and (you) sent to jail long before the junkies will. Locals look like full Crocodile Dundee extras wearing fixed blade This Is A Knoife work knives to the pub at night so nobody ever gets assaulted, and most of screeching and bizarre bullshit happens in the middle of the day when the rest of us are at work. It's a pickle

Not very much. They might be able to view the other cams. Strictly speaking there's no reason every camera shouldn't be on its own network.

Depends on how pozzed your managed switch is. A lot of consumer models have magic VLAN numbers that broadcast to every network. Old routers running OpenWRT don't have that problem, nor do most enterprise models.

Are you going to do only one camera? The problem with wireless cameras is that they can saturate your wireless network very quickly if you have several of them. If you're doing just one camera and this is for general home surveillance, that should be fine. You can probably already do it.

Ubiquiti AI cameras can be set up to trigger an event when it detects a person.

That event could be set up to tell a gun turret to aim at the location the camera is currently looking and fire a shot.

Not plug and play, but would require only minimal programming to get things working. Probably something you could get chatGPT to throw together if you told it you were designing an automation trigger for foxes and a paintball gun to protect chickens via AI camera.

I'm probably gonna buy ubiquiti since it seems the most capable out of the box with a good UI/UX.

None of these systems are perfect, but ubiquiti at least integrates the most. I can have cameras, intercoms, doorbells, magnetic locks, keypad/smart card door access, face detection for door access, license plate detection for gate access, network video recorder, access points, router, and phones. All under one umbrella, all managed from one place, locally, without needing to host any of your data in someone else's cloud.

You can cobble together similar capabilities from other companies using open source solutions, but they're incredibly difficult to get setup and working, and are far more prone to breaking after updates since they're generally not systems built to integrate together the way ubiquiti is.

I run a Raspberry Pi 4b with OpenWRT, so I can't in good faith tell you to buy something I haven't used. You can't buy it off the shelf obviously.

I don't recommend using a Pi personally, it's overkill for a home network even with SQM and other management. I just had it laying around.

It fits my uses as I don't have access to very high speed internet, so the USB 3.0 dongle I use as an WAN port does everything I need it to do, up to 700 Mbit/s or something. idr.

Look up what routers have good HW support for whatever flavor of firmware you want to run. Tomato is more noob friendly. DD-WRT/OpenWRT is gonna let you do anything you want, but you need to either have knowledge or be ready to google and read wikis, and learn some basic networking.

I don't know what the state of WiFi support is for OpenWRT in particular, so make sure it works well for that model if you're buying a wifi capable router. I just use access points instead of having a router that does 20 million things.

I don't really have a need for records because the cops in my country would be more likely to hurt me themselves if I call them than to help me, would be useless as evidence in court if I kill an attacker in self defense too, because the courts would sentence me regardless and all the media would lie about it and intentionally never mention my video evidence :)

But ig knowing what kind of profile is trying/tried to enter would be perhaps useful, I don't really live in an area where thiefs have the balls to do anything other than pickpocketing and trying to rob sneakily though, it'd be very unlikely for them to not back out when they realized my loud dogs alerted me if I'm home and will probably grab the attention of at least one of the neighbors

First is politics, so something hits the news they got to dot their i's and cross their t's. But a big one is insurance. If you have good insurance the insurance companies can fuck cops cause they have money for good lawyers to get to the bottom of things. I also don't think it's possible at all for someone like me to win against the legal system, past experiences already made it clear to me that I'm de facto subhuman legally and societally, they could easily get to bypass even the court case happening at all.

Getting back on the topic of technology I have been thinking of designing ridiculous automated suicide machines, like a gun held tight in something with its trigger pressed by a finger-like robot several times after getting the command to do so. The user would be expected to strap themselves to something first so that the body stays in aim after the first shot, I guess voice activation would be ideal. I'd do it with easy to get things and publish an article about the process so that my design can be reused and improved on, of course I'd be the first user myself, maybe I should have my test run recorded and automatically uploaded
