I'm already in the invite forums for BTN and PTP but I'm not going to put in the work to grind to a higher user class. Finding 49 more movies to upload to PTP is certainly doable but more work than I'm willing to do.

The rationale behind being in every invite forum is that if a new tracker that I'm interested in starts recruiting I can compare the requirements across all the forums and get in from wherever I'd have the easiest time.

Being in every invite forum is actually a good idea. There's historical precedence for this. Right now the meta is JUST BE IN FUCKING RED. But in the past you had a higher chance of getting recruited if you messaged the recruiters on other trackers vs ones where they are swamped with a million applications. "Recommended" depends on the private tracker and your country's piracy laws. If you live in a country where piracy results in big fines/etc and your private tracker is something like IPT or TL then you might be better off with a VPN, however assuming that all of this isn't the case then no you probably won't need one. Keep in mind that there's a difference between browsing the site and downloading the actual torrents; most private trackers don't care if you download the actual torrents using a VPN but they might care if you try to browse the site using a VPN. Another thing is that you might not be connectable and/or have slower peering so if you care about getting the most amount of upload possible then a VPN will make things worse.
