There are no Linux equivalents to Foobar2000
There are no Linux equivalents to Foobar2000
F2K is not just a "music player", its an ID3 tagger, a playlist player/creator/manager, lyric viewer/editor/downloader, equalizer, youtube player, all that and more (almost two decades of plugins that still work) with a layout you can customize as much as you want. It's quite literally the ideal Linux program yet does not have an equivalent in it.
Why is that?
>whatever tinker tranny retarded shit you suggest
Does not even begin to resemble how powerful and extensible f2k is, if I just wanted something that plays songs id just throw the fucking folder on mpv.

It does work mostly well, few issues when it comes to the equalizer like crackling.
It's just that having to set up wine just because of it is quite annoying and it's honestly quite baffling that no one ever bothered to make a proper competitor.

It seems to me that the fact that F2K can do all of those things is one reason that it's not part of Linux. The Linux ethos is very much one-tool-for-one-job, which is the opposite approach that megacorpos have tried to push (Apple/Google/etc all want users to become dependent on a single product).

I like F2K, I used it for many years when I was still on Windows, but after switching to Linux last year I can't say that I particularly miss it. Anything that I used it to do can still be done.

you can write a small program reads playlists, listens for signals to control playback, reads a text db for replay volume and starts/stops ffplay with the relevant parameters in a couple dozen lines
you can add a few more lines for each feature from the OP that you want and now you have a foobar-like system that perfectly integrates with the rest of your system according to your personal tastes
want to use different equalizer presets for different combinations of track and output destination? you can do that, easy. want to always display the lyrics on a predefined screen region? you can do that, too. that's much more powerful and extensible than relying on premade plugins for a standalone suite

>how does wine work anyway
Wine is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS, & BSD. Essentially, Wine is a β€œdynamic loader” for Windows executables. It’s a native binary, hence it can just run normally, and it knows how to deal with EXE and DLLs.

Wine loads the Windows executable into memory, parses it, figures out the dependencies, figures out where the executable code is, and then finally jumps into that code.

See the following link for more: https://werat.dev/blog/how-wine-works-101/

Tldr?
>is it a full VM
It's not a VM at all.

>is it wrapper around a single program
No.

>is it even worth using
Yes. If you need to run Windows software on another OS, it offers great performance and compatibility in most circumstances, and is far more efficient than using a VM.

yes, that's right. idk how this is confusing to you
an ideal audio player should play audio. why would i expect a player to convert something? that's what my converter is for.

>each one piped into a huge bash monstrosity
why would you do this instead of just having all your services attend to your library autonomously, in the background, while you sleep, so that when you go to play your audio you don't need to normalize the volume or fix the metadata on the fly because it's already been done?

>F2K is not just a "music player", its an ID3 tagger, a playlist player/creator/manager, lyric viewer/editor/downloader, equalizer, youtube player, all that and more (almost two decades of plugins that still work) with a layout you can customize as much as you want. It's quite literally the ideal Linux program
This is what I used to think Linux was about, you load up some full featured program that does everything, with plenty of menu options to customise it however you want. That was before I actually used Linux. The reality is that you get 6 different, half-baked interpretations of the same program and if you want any customisation you get told to either code the feature yourself or use one of the other half-baked alternatives.
