FWIW - this a nothingburger.
It's a civil suit between Eyeo, the company behind AdBlock Plus, and Axel Springer, the publisher.
It's been dragging its feet through German courts for a decade, and most recently the German high court called for a partial do-over wrt determining whether a case of copyright infringement has any merit to it, given the parts of the website's code that AdBlock Plus changed.

Note that the original problem here, apparently is that AdBlock Plus SUPPLANTED some of Springer's ads with its own white-listed ones AND MADE A PROFIT OFF OF THAT.

Totally different case from blocking ad resources or manipulating site resources to thwart ad-blocker blocker technology. Moreover, German law - like most European law is Civil Law; not Common Law and thus case law and precedent do not exist for this type of thing.

The worst that could happen is in this particular case AdBlock is forced to stop doing what they were doing specifically with web properties in Springer's portfolio, and that's that.

There have been historical cases in Germany wrt local manipulation of copyright protected works, such as TV settop boxes capable of automatically detecting and clipping out commercial advertisement blocks from recordings, allowing users to view ad-free movie recordings (or in some cases stream them with a delay while recording - simply by starting to view them ~30m after the movie started being broadcast).

These are highly analogeous to clipping ads out of a website.
NONE of those cases favored the advertiser / broadcaster in the end.

Do adblockers actually alter the JS code of individual websites?
I'm pretty sure Adblock Plus does because they have an ad whitelist or something, but do all of them do? I didn't think about that until now but it would make sense for things such as YouTube's ads to require JS workarounds.
