Why is Discord popular?
When you have more than 5-7 people in a conversation it becomes almost impossible to follow. Despite this, people do not use it for voice chat, they use it for the chatroom aspect. Why?
Anonymous No.106276866
I've only used it for WoW raiding and guild and it worked ok. Multiple rooms keep the chats cleaner and on topic, voice chats mostly work, game overlay makes it visible who is speaking.

I've used Telegram, Teams and Slack at work and they are far worse desu.

Advertising.

Because people are too stupid to host their own ventrilo servers so they sell all their data to discord instead.

That's a feature. Zoomies moved software support from issue trackers to Discord so you can't tell how many unfixed bugs there are.

Immediate gratification. you make a post and people instantly reply. You have to wait longer on forums and boards. They don't really care if they can follow other people's conversation, because they're self-centered. That's why people prefer instant messaging in general. As for why they prefer Discord, it was marketed to gamer types, who are dumb and easily manipulated. And let's be honest, the centralized services are way more convenient for normies than IRC and Matrix.

That isn't true.
>people do not use it for voice chat
This also isn't true.

Why did you make up easily disprovable lies and post them here?

Is there any empirical evidence of any of the claims you've made here, or is this all just a hunch you came up with in your brain as a consequence of your self-importance?

Where does ChatGPT say I'm wrong? Your screenshot doesn't claim impossibility at 5-7 whatsoever.

did you know that velvet worms give live births, have social rituals and hunt in packs? They are also descendants of a pre-Cambrian organism. They've been around for longer than did the fish. Makes you think.

This is just isolated demand for rigor. Something about my post really hurt your butt, because there's no way you go around doing this to every post on here that doesn't provide scientific evidence with each claim.

I didn't "demand" anything. I asked you if you had a source, or if you made it up.

You answered that you made it up, which answers my question. Are you confused about what the word "demand" means? Did you just decide you needed to be a victim in our interaction?

>do not use it for voice chat
>only chatroom aspect
/v/ermin use it for the voice chat and screencasts all the time. They also make channels to be stickies with links to moded stuff, wikis, files to play around with. If the server's dedicated to a creative game, there's a gallery channel showcasing creations, if the game's a multiplayer, chances are you get a channel for game invites, and many have bots to calculate stuff for you like it's an inferior scratch buffer with a pre-built lib (the graphics part's better though). It all makes a nice walled garden of domain specific info with a dedicated toilet chat for shitposting, easy to setup and easy to consume, that's why it's popular.
Only chat channels are retarded - but booda booda boom, it's an inherent flaw of chats not specific to pisscord. Irc and streams are similar.

I only use 50-10000 people discord servers, and even on the larger end there will only ever be a handful of people typing in a channel at a time.

Much larger discord servers, or discord servers with no clear purpose, will just be full of spam though I'd imagine.

nearly every discord server i've ever seen, is pretty much like irc, a bunch of empty channels with people lurking and no one actually talking. maybe 1/10 1/20 servers are active. of the active servers maybe 3/10 are real organic discussion instead of bot spam

Convenience and marketing of it's early days + typical mechanism of social media where people stay with shitty social media because it's used by people.
You cannot replace Discord because current Internet users are there, for good or worse. It will die either through some internal bullshit, or because next generations of online users will start using something else.

I'm curious what kind of evidence you expected me to provide. That some p prefer instant gratification, or that it played a part in the popularization of Discord specifically? Or that centralized social media platforms tend to be more popular than decentralized ones?

this, the main thing is network effects. communications software gets more useful the more people use it. it emerged because it was a free and at the time superior alternative to teampspeak/ventrilo.
