They're not.

Anyway, what are some reliable and quiet 8-12 TB HDDs to slap into normal ATX size case for bulk storage purposes?

WD red plus?

Production has gone down. Data centers are hoarding them for AI. Trump's bullshit. The drive I bought last October has almost doubled in price since then.

Because they're essentially enterprise gear now. The proles live in sub-1TB SSD pods, and are happy.

lol, they are. Are you on another planet?
I bought 10x 18TB HC550's for $175US/ea in 2023, another batch of 22x 18TB HC550's for $179 a few months earlier in 2023.
At the end of 2024 I bought 3x 18TB HC550's for $279.
Now they are over $350 for an 18TB HC550 WD.

Glad I did a petabyte expansion before mid 2024... geez. Now is the time NOT to buy any disks.

Imagine seriously buying a 24TB barracuda... Even ironwolf drives shit out within the first 3 years, what makes you think the lowest bin HDD by shitgate lasts long enough to fill 24TB?

I'm using this for my cold storage/backups. Price is okay and it's fairly quiet.

Folks, let me tell you, the tariffs...the tremendous tariffs we've put in place, are going to make hard drives cheaper than you have ever seen. Cheaper! You’re going to say, "Mr. Trump, how is this possible?" And I’ll say, "Because I'm the best at tariffs, believe me, nobody knows tariffs like me!"

You see, these companies, they've been ripping you off for years. China, they're laughing at us...they're taking our money and giving you overpriced junk. But not anymore! With my wonderful tariffs, they're going to have to compete! They're going to have to make better products here in America, where the workers are great, the factories are top-notch, and the prices? Let me tell you, the prices are going to plummet.

The fake news says, "Oh, tariffs make things expensive!" Wrong! Wrong! They're scared because they don't want you to know the truth. The truth is, when you punish the cheaters big time, cheaters like China, you force them to negotiate! And guess what? We're winning. We always win. The best deal ever.

And the hard drives? Down, folks. Down! You're going to buy them for pennies. Penny-wise and Trump-wise. Everyone is talking about it. The smart people, the real smart people...I could have been on Jeopardy, by the way, but I don't have to prove anything...everyone says, "Trump's tariffs are working!"

So don't believe the crooked media. Don't believe the Sleepy Joe economists. You believe me. I'm giving you the best, the most beautiful, the largest discount on hard drives you could imagine, because I'm the one who figured it out. And when you finally see the prices, you're going to say, "Thank you, Mr. Trump. Thank you!" And I'll say, "You're welcome. It was the easiest deal ever."

Why are you upset anon?
Are you under the impression consumer HDDs are more reliable in a "home" scenario than datacenter HDDs in the same scenario?

People go on backblaze data because drives that hold up while stressed, should do even better when not stressed.
Anonymous No.106290843 >>106291040
>>106290009

Thinking something is better because it does well under continuous operation as opposed to intermittent operation is an engineering fallacy.

TL;DR in some machines having to constantly start and stop puts more stress on the parts than if it were constantly in motion.

They are not that expensive, The inventory is simply shifting to distributors for datacenters, enterprise customers. Retail space is drying up.The masses are moving to SSD media for their use case.

You know they are all the same physical drives just loaded with different firmware? The price difference is pure market segmentation ie enterprise customers are paying top dollar for firmware optimized for their use case that is useless for mainstream crowd.
Anonymous No.106290982 >>106291032
>>106290950
Technically yes, they're producing the same hardware, but nothing is perfect in real life and manufacturing, 5-10% of them are not exactly to spec, they have inherent defects that prevent them from running as designed, so you sell them a bit cheaper to get rid of them faster with a different name, so you don't tarnish the reputation of the good stuff.
Anonymous No.106291032
>>106290982
Nope, they are the same even with factory defectives. The difference comes from firmware loaded and service agreements for support. The enterprise customers are paying the premium for better support/service agreements.

From a quick glance the load/unload cycles between seagate consumer and enterprise is rated the same.
For WD, the consumer blue and black drives have less cycles than NAS and enterprise

It makes sense because there really is no more consumer HDDs, a seagate 12TB consumer drive is mechanically the same as the enterprise.

>>106290950
>enterprise customers are paying top dollar for firmware optimized for their use case
They are found cheaper sometimes.
If anything consumers are paying top dollar for minor firmware changes when they buy an more expensive ironwolf over a exos.
Same with WD Red and gold sometimes

That's why there is a fascination at all with enterprise drives for data storage, minimal downsides, but a cheaper price.

I remember distinctly where a seagate x20 was like $280 (brand new, not refurb) from newegg and the ironwolf equivalent was $410
