He overpaid for an NBA team but didn't care because he has so much wealth. By most accounts, he has a very stable family life and raised normal children to be well adjusted adults.
His other moves with money, beyond buying multiple houses, are mostly unknown but probably are standard conservative wealth management. He did get involved in the "fighting misinformation" fad for a while. USAFacts.org is owned by him and was highly visible during the pandemic until the data started showing things they didn't want it to show, at which time it mysteriously stopped being updated.

>Steven Anthony Ballmer was born on March 24, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan, as the son of Beatrice Dworkin and Frederic Henry (Fritz Hans) Ballmer, a manager at the Ford Motor Company. Ballmer's mother is Jewish. Through his mother, Ballmer is a second cousin of actress and comedian Gilda Radner. Ballmer grew up in the community of Farmington Hills, Michigan.
>In 1973, he attended college prep and engineering classes at Lawrence Technological University. He graduated as valedictorian from Detroit Country Day School, a private college preparatory school in Beverly Hills, Michigan, with a score of 790 on the mathematical section of the SAT and was a National Merit Scholar.
>Ballmer, the first in his family to graduate from college, attended Harvard University, where he was a manager for the Harvard Crimson football team and a member of the Fox Club, worked on The Harvard Crimson newspaper as well as the Harvard Advocate, and lived down the hall from fellow sophomore Bill Gates. He scored highly in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, an exam sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, scoring higher than Bill Gates. He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in applied mathematics and economics in 1977.
The NBA team and being Jewish explains why he started hanging out with Mark Cuban so much.

The report exposes how the Clippers were profitable before their acquisition by Ballmer, but then reported $700 million in losses for tax purposes in following years.
>In 2023, ProPublica did another report, about Ballmer's usage of wash sales helped by Goldman Sachs, under the label "Tax Advantaged Loss Harvesting", resulting in tax savings of more than half a billion dollars over 5 years.

>In 2018, Steve Ballmer reported $656 million in income and paid $78 million in federal taxes, resulting in a federal income tax rate of 12%. This low rate was achieved through the use of tax provisions allowing him to deduct the purchase price of the Los Angeles Clippers, which he bought for $2 billion, against his income over time. This deduction, based on the amortization of the team's assets, allowed him to report significant tax losses despite the team's profitability, enabling him to offset other income and drastically reduce his tax liability. The practice, while legal, has drawn public scrutiny as it results in a much lower effective tax rate compared to high-earning athletes like LeBron James, who paid a 35.9% rate on $124 million in income that same year.

How many people with incomes at or below the median use it? No one said it was secret, that's something you added as a strawman. But it is something that exists to advantage the wealthy. Now your predictable reply will be to claim it's not just wealthy people using it and come up with some outlier anecdote that ignores that it's not something that benefits those at or below the median income.
Post the size of your hat.

Did it not already pop? It's just it was a micro-bubble, overhyped but not over-invested so when it went nobody really noticed. You want to start a new "cloud services" company, you'll have a hard time getting investors to care.
AI though is a scary bubble. Massively over invested and still not found its niche. Coomer images and unlicensed therapy isn't going to do squat for the billions it's taken to get this far. Nor is all the companies buying thousands of dollars worth of openai credits even so much as offsetting the bills. If nobody comes up with a killer app soon, pop, pop, pop. But if they do... kaching!

And if LeBron James had used his money to buy a productive asset he too could have offset the purchase price against his taxes.
Tax incentives are there to INCENTIVISE rich cunts to invest. They do this by making that money go further in purchasing power rather than just taxing the fuck out of it no matter what you do, incentivising you to just leave it in their account, benefiting no one.
The US tax system prefers to gamble on larger taxation from future profits instead of penny pinching the smaller amounts.

It just gets trust funded at that point. Like the previous Clippers owner paid $12m for them, his wife then had him declared batshit and sold them to Ballmer after he started spouting raycisms. And he was a fucking Jew lawyer. But anyway, I digress - the cash went to Sterling Family Trust, aka her, and I doubt the Govt ever saw jackshit of that $12m to $2B profit differential. And the same will happen with Ballmer, currently $2B to $5B+. The game was rigged from the start.

My opinion is that Microsoft is extremely overvalued.
There is no way that Microsoft is worth so much money. Their biggest product is an OS so bad that entire generations prefer to use a touchscreen device with Android (Linux) rather than learn Windows.
They failed really hard at their attempt to compete with AWS (yeah, sure, they have a lot of gov customers that keep Azure afloat, but this is just money wash).
All their attempts to copy Apple's success failed miserably, and those examples are nowadays used in business schools all over the world to define failure.
And they pretty much bet everything on AI but so far have not found a single way to pay for itself.
ChatGPT is so cost prohibitive that even if everyone paid for it, it would still not turn a profit.
