Has anyone done external SPI flashing for libreboot? I have a T430 and the site says that's the recommended way that model but internal would obviously be much easier.

I have a T470 and currently it has an NVME drive in the 2.5" bay
Isn't there a way to plug in the SSD directly to the motherboard and use a second SATA drive?

You could get some sort of breakout board/cable for the WWAN slot which is wired for both SATA and NVMe. Either M.2 (B+M) to SATA and reuse the board from your existing caddy, or M.2 (B+M) to M.2 (M) plus the usual SATA cable for the bay.

You don't need to replace it unless you are anticipating needing more space. Wipe it and install your OS of choice.

Even then you can upgrade your drive later. You'll just need an external nvme adapter and there are guides to move everything over without reinstalling.

nta but I installed WQHD on T430 and the process is mostly the same (except you buy different components)
all you need is the adapter (IPS mod kit) and any compatible display
if buying from ali, make sure to check they send the exact model they put in title, because many times it will be a "compatible" one (might be also compatible with the adapter, but will be shittier in brightness or colors)
then remove keyboard, palmrest, display, swap in new panel, plug in adapter, a bit of cable management and assemble it, done

T14 gen 1 AMD checks every box except one dimm is soldered. I bought one with a ryzen 4650u for $217 on ebay, threw in a second 8gb dimm and 1tb hmb nvme. Came with 99% original battery life left.

4000 series is such a stepup from the previous gens, the CPU only need 8w to fully boost a core to 4.1ghz or whatever it is, if you set battery saving mode in win11 it caps TDP to like 10w, the fan almost never comes on but the machine feels very responsive for browsing and stuff. I get 7-9hrs on a full charge, usually I just cap the charging at 70% because I never run it below 20% like that.

Also being able to play many vidya such as ps2 emulation is pretty nice. Many games like dark souls 3 are playable in 720p.

Warning; Brave is not open source. Brave is proprietary and doesn't even have reproducible binaries. "Source code" provided is actually 100% unrelated to the actual Brave binaries. If you try to compile it (nobody has ever done this), you just get different browser binaries that doesn't even have Brave branding. If you have orange Brave logo, Brave name and other branding in your Brave, then it is 100% proprietary non-free black box spyware.

The claim that “Brave is not open source” and is “100% proprietary” is false. Brave’s source code is public under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 and lives on Brave’s official GitHub; anyone can audit or build it. Official Brave releases use branding (logo, name) for trademark reasons—a standard open source practice. Developers have built Brave from source; the claim “nobody has ever done this” is incorrect. While Brave is working towards fully reproducible builds, its binaries are auditable and routinely examined by privacy experts. Brave’s open code and frequent review make it the opposite of a “black box.” The commenter’s claims are misleading.

To summarize:
>Not open source
False: Fully open source code
>Proprietary
False: Branding assets only for trademark
>Not reproducible
In progress; binaries are auditable
>Nobody builds it
False: Built by developers/users
>Black box spyware
False: Code is public and reviewed

It comes with a monsterous intel 225H cpu, oled 14" 2.8K (2880 x 1800), 32GB RAM, 84Wh battery, 100w charger all for the price of £900.

Of course its not a thinkpad but the equivallant would be over £2000 on the business range.

Reminds me of my old Sony Vaio from the Vista era. That laptop upgraded to Windows 7, to 8, to 10 and all I ever did to it was upgrade the ram and put in an SSD. The thing was insanely complex inside so I never even did the paste on it (which is probably what killed it). Fans even after cleaning sounded like a jet engine but not bad for a laptop I bought in 2008. I had to watch Youtube videos in 360p but was somehow still useable. Thing finally died in 2023 and now I'm here. God I wish laptops were still built like that.

>Gmails web client killed my old computer hobby.

Lack of knowledge did. You don't need the web client because Gmail Basic HTML view was designed for slow machines.

You can also use a light fast browser. The price of technical progress is rapid change, no different from the rapid obsolescence of early 1900s automobiles. The boomer idea all objects should be preserved forever is ignorant. Every machine is a tool built to perform a task and when it's superseded it need not exist.

>Like omg, that computer is like, two years old!

Your problematic computer was not two years old. Why do you feel the counterproductive need to exaggerate instead of seeking knowledge to SOLVE your difficulty? You had a tech problem and chose an emotional reaction when intelligence undefiled by emotion was called for, but take it as a lesson learned.

Email clients are much preferable to webmail because they give users control and very convenient backup. Thunderbird Portable is glorious because backup is easy as copying the program folder. Give it a try!

People put broken stuff up for sale for absolutely retarded prices, like $50 less than a fully functional one, when the part that's broken would cost you $150-300. I guess there's people out there dumb enough to pay it.

Anonymous No.106346913 [Report] >>106347138

it is half true. the t480 has notoriously bad battery life, so the double battery is mandatory unless you plan to carry a charger all the time (unless you get the dual core model, but why the fuck would you? it's just a worse t470, less usb ports, no windows 7 support, trackpoint issues etc) and let's be honest, it's pretty hard to source genuine full capacity double batteries.
the t470 had pretty good battery life for it's time, i didn't bother getting the double battery, but even with the standard battery i'd estimate my t14g2 (current laptop) is only about 50% better. it isn't an entirely fair comparison though, my t14g2 has a much better display than the shitty 1366x768 display my t470 had
i would not get a t470 either though, you're sacrificing a lot with a machine that old. for that matter don't get a t490 either, just get a t14g2 (or a t14g1 if you're poor), they are strictly better machines
