You aren't supposed to actually upgrade it. You just install it and get it working, and then periodically install and upgrade packages that you actually need. They try to trick you by recommending the exact opposite, because the people writing that advice are the ones paid to give more advice and need you to keep breaking your system.

you should be using Conan for C/C++ dependency management, if you think Conan is bloated garbage adding SDL3 as a submodule to your project isn't the worst. Pretty easy to build. In general though you shouldn't depend on system available libraries ever. Way too brittle as you've discovered.

It is possible, but not particularly hard to fix either. If you want to be safe, back up your home folder and wherever else you keep user data to an external drive. Try updating. If things break, just reinstall arch (technically you can try fixing your existing installation, and it is good to learn how to do it, but if you're strapped for time reinstalling is more straightforward.) and restore your data from your backup.

Thank you anon, most my stuff is already either on cloud or backed up. But getting everything how i wanted to work took me some time, so maybe i should make a install script. Is that the usual practice? Do arch users have install scripts they run to set up the system and how do I make/run one?

Hell no. Don't do this. You'll never learn how to actually fix your fucking system like this.
>is that the usual practice
I've been using the same gentoo install for 6 years straight. No, it's not the usual practice. This isn't Windows, you shouldn't need to reinstall your OS every two months.

I've been using Ubuntu and debian before arch and I reinstall the system every year or so just to get rid of all the useless shit ive installed or changed or downloaded for the CS classes. I can't keep track of them all.
But I am kinda done with the classes now and ready to settle down.
Does gentoo ever get too annoying with the compile times for daily and programming use? I might consider trying that one too.

Compile times aren't even a factor, on a decent machine you'll just leave it overnight once a month.
But tread carefully, Gentoo is quite a commitment at first especially with a custom kernel and such, and about once a year portage does throw you quite the dependency tangle to solve. But not once in 6 years has Gentoo left me with anything broken in my system, the distro is maintained almost professionally.

That might be so for the updates but i was more concerned with initial installs. When I need some new program or language I don't want to spend hours compiling first.
Anonymous No.106290768 >>106290939
>>106290570
Most things compile in some minutes. Only really big software suites and web browsers with their dependencies can take an hour, at least on a 5800x.
Also since you're compiling everything on Gentoo, you're usually pulling in all the common build tools for most common languages anyway, so most of the time you already have everything necessary for developing on your system already.
Gentoo does also have a purely binary distribution these days, you could check that out too. I've never tried it though.
