Sounds simple but your ID sticks around when you upload it online. It's like letting a local bookstore make a copy of your license and keeping it forever, like no you should be able to just show it to them.

The government needs to make a new ID for people that very simply tracks their birthday and that's it. You go down to the DMV, get your digital pass, and that's it. Instead of making developers bend over backwards securing personal data on the internet you just go to the DMV, show them your ID, boom you get a hall pass. Make a centralized government database with the number of each one and an API for websites to just ask if your birthday actually makes you over 18. It'd be easy if the government had even a little competent people in it.

The main issue is building a secure website and API costs a lot of human resources even if the government wanted to do this they would probably be unable to resist adding surveillance "features" to it such as tracking every website you visit.

If it does happen, the US would never be the one to implemented it. The EU is doing something sensible with a zero-knowledge encryption scheme that uses signing keys, but the EU is literally the only government I’ve run into that appears to hire people who understand tech (their politicians are still just as bad as many though). They seem to have solved the issue by open-sourcing it, which means they avoid the horrid tendering fuckery of the government trying to do anything technical.
