It seems like Apple killed the whole market segment instead of bring it along like they usually do. Quest is forgotten, Valve index is extinct, what well known company even makes vr/ar headsets anymore? Apple and meta will proobably kill theirs after another failed update, and all thatโ€™s left is those weird boutique expensive companies.

Yeah. It forced Meta to fix the shitty pass through on the Quest 3. It was almost unusable (heavy warping and lots of noise) before the Vision Pro hit the market and few months after you could actually read things while wearing the Quest 3 (without peeking through the giant nose hole).

People bought iWatches and iEarbuds it could have happened. I think they missed by $1500. Now the headset market is dead because everyone knows while it's cool to experience the headset form factor just sucks too much.
Anonymous No.106298300 >>106298307
I recently read that Apple was made because people are treating like a commercial business product than a retail one. Well duh it is priced so much higher than the Quest 3. And for the price you could build a nice Quest 3 PCVR setup.

the problem is that it starts at $3500. think about how many single objects the average person owns that cost that much. maybe 1-2. a car, a motorcycle, a house, maybe a wedding ring.
the vision pro just doesnโ€™t have enough of a killer app to justify being your second 3.5k+ value item next to your car.

Here are the requirements for success of a VR headset in the 2020s:
>No stupid eye screen that looks like shit anyway
>Better headstrap, goggles do not work for comfort, only for props
>Controllers that can pair with a PC or the headset
>Advertising that doesn't look like a fucking meme
>Below 1500$
>Fully Linux compatible with FOSS software and drivers
Apple released a 2010s headset in 2024.

Embarrassing product from Apple. Even ignoring the Quest 3 being better in every single way, the fact that chinkshit companies can already replicate the entire AVP experience into a pair of sunglasses is just insane.
This was a Newton tier swing and miss.

Not every way, it has the best cameras and processor by far, but was gimped by being limited to a subsection of the iPad's app store for software, and third party apps couldn't use the cameras. The fact that it used the exact same SoC as their laptops made the fact that it cost three times one of them but couldn't use the software sting even more.
They eventually added controllers support this year. Like that was going to help do anything but let people who bought one already at least use it a little.

Yes but no. The real reason is that smart phones are the end all of "tech gear". everything is now built with the intent that it needs to connect to your smart phone so outside of being a gimmicky toy VR headsets and goggles will never be a thing.

Neural interfaces are the end all of tech gear. In the meantime AR/VR is a massive leap forward.
A desktop setup is even more cumbersome, yet people still use them over laptops. People still use TV's over phones

Once they smooth the rough edges with AR/VR (we're very close), it'll be the far and away superior way to look at screens

yeah, i do. while i don't have a use for it, as far as i know, it has a very dedicated userbase and apple is still working on it. i know, for some of you it sounds weird that a company launched a product that wasn't a huge success (wich it even wasn't planned to be given it's limited release) and is still supporting it and developing for it when you just got on some kickstarter hypetrain and got a half-baked "thing" two years later with no further support three months in and limited functionality before the end of year.

Are you aware that your eye inside the headset is not really refocusing even though you are looking at various depths? You are replacing a screen that you can look away from every once in a while with an optical illusion that keeps your eyes pinned to a screen on your face. I don't see the benefit.
